7. then we f'd up big, i'm looking at this check and thinking it's fake |
but as far as i can tell it's the real thing. We owed and Add $782 which we payed and they cashed and the check is for a little under 5K.

8. Does it look like a tax return check? |
Those are pretty obvious. I don't think their design has changed over the years.

2. You should get a letter |
in the next day or two. If we make an error (which we haven't for years since we started using TurboTax), they'd send the check and then a letter would come explaining the discrepancy.
You could go to IRS.gov and click on the "where's my refund" and follow the link and see what it tells you.

10. Did you put in the amount that you filed for or the amount that the check |
is for? You should put in the amount that you filed for (even if it turns out that you filed wrong). It is one of those pieces of info they need to make sure it is "you".

11. you know what, i just added up the amount of the check i sent them |
to the refund turbo tax said we were getting back but then it said the AMT kicked in so we owed, those 2 things added together equal the amount of the check i got exactly. You know i called turbo tax when i was doing this and they said that i did owe. For once an error in my favor.

6. You may have made a mistake on your return |
My mom did that, and paid $600 or so. She just got a check for $1900 -- a $1300 error in her favor. And you will get a letter from the IRS explaining the check, so don't worry about it! Just enjoy!!

14. $1300 error in your mom's favor??? Holy cow......wish I'd have an |
error like that......as it is, we had to pay a total of 12,000 combined fed and state. My mother passed away and left us a little of her nest egg........so I guess I can't complain.

12. DON'T CASH IT YET!!!!! |
That happened to me three years ago. Some idiot misread my return and although they cashed our check for $3000, they issued me a refund for $30,000.
Thirty days later they came asking for the uncashed check. I had cashed it, but hadn't spent it obviously. I did make a little interest off the deal. A very little.

15. Wait for the letter, and don't cash it until you know what it's for. |
Years ago I had a humorous back and forth with the IRS over a $4.00 refund that they sent me in error. I think I still have the check in my files somewhere. Other than that time when they've made an error it has been easy to clear up once I know why they sent the check or bill.

16. I worked in this department for a while this year. |
Wait for the letter, then cash the check. You should get a letter from one of my former co-workers soon. :)
