Child dies after running into burning home to find mother
STEELTON, Pennsylvania (AP) -- A 6-year-old girl who escaped a house fire early Tuesday died after running back inside to find her mother, authorities said. The youngster did not realize that her mother had jumped to safety from a second-floor window.

Firefighters found the body of little Da-Onah Watts under a bed on the second floor.

Da-Onah and a 13-year-old cousin had been asleep on the first floor when they awoke to flames and ran from the house, said Police Chief Kenneth Lenker.

The older girl, Nesha Barely, lost her grip on Da-Onah as they escaped, Lenker said. Nesha told authorities Da-Onah kept yelling for her mother and went back in to try to find her.

The fire appeared to be accidental and probably started in the laundry room, the fire chief said.

3. Greatest cause of residential fire fatalities (in order)
1. Running back in to "rescue" a human being.
2. Running back in to "rescue" a pet.
3. Asphyxiated in sleep (no smoke detector, defective smoke detector, ignoring or sleeping through smoke detector).

5. Many years ago my 5 yr old cousin caught fire while in the house alone.
Her dress caught fire while she was in the kitchen in rural Ireland. She ran out to her parents who were in the field working and they saw her coming towards them ablaze but by the time they reached her she was gone. Imagine that sight. This was around 1900.
Sorry for the personal reflection but it came into my mind as soon as I read this sad story.

8. Please read this
My children are grown up now, but when they were small, we all sat down together and discussed where to meet if there ever was a fire. We all agreed to meet at the mailbox out by the driveway. I asked them several times over the years, I guess to see if thy remembered. I always felt good about that.
