I just got stung by a bee!
I was sitting on the couch, with my arm on the arm of the couch. I moved my arm just a little bit and all of a sudden, the ring finger on my right hand felt like a hair-thin red-hot wire was being poked inside my finger. Ouch, ouch, ouch!!!!!

I jumped up off the couch, looked at the arm of it, and here is a yellowjacket moving around. MrSG smacked it with a magazine and took it outside. I put baking soda on it (no stinger left in the finger). It's a little swollen, and still hurts a tiny bit, but man, oh, man, did it hurt when I first got stung!

1. A Yellowjacket is not a Bee.
I hope you don't hurt for long. :(

Oh yea, if your tongue swells up and your heart stops, go to the emergency room. :scared:

3. I didn't know that yellow jackets weren't bees
What are they, other than little suckers who can sting like hell?

4. Bumble bees. Wasps. Yellowjackets.
I think they're all different. I think.

13. Bumblers can't even sting
Wasps don't have barbs on their stingers, so they can nail you again. Bees do have barbs which hook in the skin and the stinger is pulled out of their bodies which kills them. So, the moral is, if stung by a bee, the stinger will stay in the skin. Get it out or it could infect and definitely will itch like hell.

Hubby keeps bees and I speak from experience. There was that fun filled, action packed night the bear got to the hives and between the two of us got about fifty stings.

14. Holy cow! I assume neither of you are allergic!
No stinger; it was definitely a yellow jacket, but damn, it hurt!

Thanks for the info, BTW.

16. Allergic
He isn't or he'd been dead some time ago. I am a bit, so I just stay out of their way. Honey bees aren't normally aggressive, but having your house knocked over would piss off anyone.

Wasp venom is very nasty, much worse than a bee's.

17. My FIL almost died a few years ago after getting stung
by three wasps. The paramedics almost didn't make it in time. :scared:

He had never had an allergic reaction to being stung before. Now, he has one of those kits to treat being stung.

21. Bumble bees can sting
Though not as likely to attack people as other social insects like yellowjackets, bumble bees can and will sting. Unlike honey bees, which have a barbed stinger that remains in the skin, bumble bees can sting repeatedly. Stings are most likely to occur around a nest. Bumble bees rarely sting during pollen gathering visits to flowers, just like honey bees.

25. I'm glad they don't sting while gathering pollen, because we have
a number of them around here too! And I was outside working all weekend in the yard, as well as several hours tonight, and dodged more than one of them. Maybe I should wear a beekeeper outfit to work in the yard!

6. We have wasps and bumblebees around here too.
A few years ago, wasps built a nest inside a wall in the bedroom (worked their way in from the outside, don't ask me how). MrSG had gone to bed, and got up a little bit later, thinking he had been bit by a spider. Took care of it, he went back upstairs, and five minutes later he came running downstairs, saying there were wasps in the bedroom. Kept the door shut, and the next day I went and got two bug bombs. A day later I was vacuuming up several hundred dead wasps!

7. Yellow jackets are rather aggressive little wasps...
I hate them and all of their brethren/cousins more than anything on this earth(except the Bush criminal gang).
I haven't seen any yet this year(in Maine)so I am still enjoying the comforting little fantasy that it is too soon for them to be out....

18. My doctor has recommended
an immediate poultice of meat tenderizer. It bonds with and helps extract the protein in the venom.

I'm not allergic, but I do get quite a local reaction. I was stung right above my right eye in the fall when I was cycling. The bee got wedged between my glasses and my face. I used ice right away, but the following day, my eye started swelling. By the next morning, it was swollen completely shut. He said it took awhile because I already take a bunch of crap for my allergies and asthma, so it took awhile. Anyway, he gave me a shot and the swelling subsided a few hours later.

So, now in my first aid kit, I carry a little baggy of meat tenderizer. We joked that I better not get searched while cycling cause a little bag of white powder may raise suspicions.

Anyway, you should probably take Benadryl for a couple of days so your reaction doesn't spread. Hope you feel better.

When I was a kid, we'd visit friends who had a beach house where jellyfish were abundant. All the locals kept meat tenderizer in their beach bags...

37. It wasn't a very fun experience,
fortunately, it happened in the science building (the thing must have flow in to escape the cold), so I got ice pretty quickly. And the lecture I was there to listen to was about the use of herbs for medicinal lotions and traditional magic potions (this was around Halloween) and one of the samples they had works well on stings.

Edited on Wed Apr-26-06 06:01 AM by pokerfan
No stinger to remove! :)

Bees are much less aggressive but leave their stinger and venom pouch behind which by the way continues to pump after the bee has flown off to its eventual demise.

I remember getting stung by a Yellow Jacket about a dozen times on my chest. what sucked was I was on my motorcycle at the time, I90 to be exact and in heavy traffic. So I'm trying to get off the freeway and kill the little bastard and not dump the bike, all at the same time. I was wearing a leather jacket and a full face helmet and the little fucker entered through a tiny gap near my adams apple. I figured it was just a piece of sand or small gravel kicked up by another vehicle. That happens. But then the stinging began. I get the bike onto the shoulder and dump it on its side and start tearing my clothes off. Cars are driving by and honking at me! Yeah, big fucking joke. Anyway, I either killed him or he flew off. But I hate those little bastards.
