92. Holly was phenomenal a couple of years ago in Milwaukee.

I had seen her about a week earlier, playing a fairly full house at the Beachland Ballroom in Cleveland. Well, at the Cactus Club, there was about 2 dozen people in attendance. Only about half of whom were familiar with Ms. Golightly's work.

So she just fucked around for an hour and a half. "Pizza party! Pizza party!" She played "Charm" for me (in Cleveland I had nearly driven her insane with my post show insistences that The Good Things was one of the finest albums ever recorded by anyone in any genre EVER), which made me happy. I gave Bruce Brand a copy of my record like a total geek. It was a blast! :thumbsup:

Yes, Janis was soulful. But I preferred Grace by far. And "her band" did more than provide backup, until cocaine took its toll.

From the more recent past: Blondie & the Pretenders. And Romeo Void--ignored by the world but not by some of us at DU. The record companies would not promote them because Debra Iyall was chubby. Too bad that her fine singing & songwriting were not enough. Besides, there were some good looking guys in the band. (Yes, I can be shallow.)

Fairport Convention with Sandy Denny & Pentangle with Jacquie McShee, for my Inner Folkie. Fleetwood Mac for convincing me it was OK to buy a best-selling LP.

There are lots more, but these are at the TOP (for me).

(X was & is totally hip. But Exene's & John Doe's harmonies reminded me far too much of the repulsive It's a Beautiful Day.)

I didn't read every post, just the titles for some of them, but i was shocked to see a thread this long until someone mentioned Heart. I mean, they wrote the songs, too! They weren't just little dollies to adorn the band! And Nancy can play some too! She's not a great guitar player, but pretty good. And, she has a voice almost as good as her sister's. (Ann is a phenomenal singer! Not just pipes, but can flat out deliver a tune!)
