I despise Elway (see above) but he did carry the franchise for a long time hell they redesigned the helmets to look like him.

Montana-this has nothing to do with not likeing the 49'ers- is vastly overrated. He filled a role in an offense that required no great talent from anyone on it (aside from the offensive line). It was simple pitch and catch and throw to set up the run. I am no fan of Bill Walsh (he is enough of a fan to go around) but it was a brilliantly designed offensive mostly in its simplicity (of the play not the calling)and flexibility.

Steve Young is probably all around the most talented QB ever. The day I heard that the 49'ers got him from Tampa I actually dropped the beer I had in my hand. I couldn't believe that the entire rest of the league would let that happen if only to stop SF from having that quality of backup.

Namath was a great ICON for football but look up his stats. Barely a 50% completion rate and more interceptions than TDs.

Otto Graham deserves some mention here. Along with Paul Brown Graham created the modern day QB position as we know it. Before that you had raw talent and on the fly playing in the form of the GREAT Sammy Baugh and others. "Automatic Otto" changed the game.
