'Lost' Actress Chooses Jail Over Service

HONOLULU - "Lost" star Michelle Rodriguez surrendered to authorities Tuesday to begin a five-day jail sentence for drunken driving.


Rodriguez, who portrays police officer Ana Lucia, opted for jail time and a $500 fine rather than 240 hours of community service.

"I kind of have to get back to my life, go back to making some money," Rodriguez said outside the courtroom after pleading guilty to driving under the influence. "It kind of gave me a hard hit. ... I'm human."




On Tuesday, the judge gave Rodriguez the option of jail time or community service. Carrying three books and dressed casually in a tank top and sweats, she surrendered to authorities at the Kaneohe District Court later in the day.

Choosing jail over community service was a "personal choice," said her attorney, Steve Barta.

"I would suspect that because she has a hard time even going out for a meal without being intruded upon for an autograph or photograph, it's really difficult for her to do community service," he said.

2. 5 days in jail or 240 hours doin god-knows-what

If she's going to have a criminal record no matter what, the jail gets you done faster. Of course, she'll probably be no where near actual violent criminals I guess.

5. Well, just my opinion, but ...

If it's her first offense and nobody was hurt, I wouldn't really put her near actual violent criminals.

It was an extremely dangerous and stupid thing to do, yes, but I can't say that I've never made one of those choices in my life.

I guess I wasn't very articulate, but really I was saying I'm not sure if I'd make the same choice as her, but givent the circumstances it's not a bad choice. I've also been stupid in my life.

4. I don't blame her.

The community service could take months to complete, depending on how many hours she can get at a time. You figure the max is about 8 hours a day and most is less.

Five days of sitting in a cell, maybe convincing the jailors to allow you a couple of books. You know she won't be in the general pop areas, even in a county jail.

I'd do the five days.

Not that I've ever been in jail as anything but a visitor, but everytime I've seen or smelled the food being served to the inmates, I've gotten sick.

9. I can confirm that... the food really, really sucks...

In fact, to paraphrase Bart Simpson, I didn't think it was possible, but it both sucks and blows. The cold cut slice they give you -- ostensibly "turkey" or "bologna" -- looks like the face of the moon, full of holes and craters. It's a bit slimy too. Most people try to trade it for someone else's apple, but nobody's fool enough to go for that.

I've been inside county a couple times, but never longer than two days. Given the option, I'd do the CS. But if I was famous, I could understand doing the time. Even five days in jail is five days too many though. I cannot stress how badly jail sucks. The only time it's even halfway tolerable is protest arrests, when a bunch of you get thrown in together at the same time. Then the time goes by quick.

10. I just love these vain people

I wouldn't recognize her if she was wearing a big sign saying, "Lost Actress Michelle Rodriguez" and they make it sound like she causes a traffic jam every time she leaves her house. Please. :eyes:

That said, I don't really blame her for just doing the time and getting it over with although I wonder if there might be a lessening of what goes on your record if you take the community service.

12. Yeah, I'm having problems

with the claim that she attracts that much attention. I live in LA and can personally attest to how unrecognizable people become when they toss on a baseball cap and sunglasses.

I actually held a conversation with one of the stars of my absolute favorite TV show one time and didn't realize who she was until after she'd walked away...even then it was voice recognition.
