I need the opinions of the greatest minds on the net. |
|
Friday night our house was egged. 2 dozen eggs. We woke up to it and my husband spend 2 hours Saturday morning cleaning it off.
At first, we thought it was someone who was pissed at our daughter. Well, it turns out it was a freshman girl and some of her friends at my daughter's high school and it was random.
My question to you good folks. Should I call her parents? I don't have any real proof other than the fact that she was apparently bragging about it and someone overheard her.
What would you do? More importantly, what would Grovelbot do?

1. I would call her parents and gauge their reaction |
|
If they are upset about this, let them handle it. If not, I would see about pressing charges.

The only good thing is that they didn't get my husband's company car. Apparently the albumin rots paint on cars immediately and his company has a pretty firm policy about prosecuting vandalism of their property.

Hope so. I would call the parents, and if they are not helpful, report it to the police.
Shoot, report it anyway. If they did this vandalism randomly, they will do it again.

4. No. But I do have witnesses to the aftermath. We couldn't get all |

of the egg off the roof, so it is still there.

I have to say I was really pissed because we had just had the house power washed. That day as a matter of fact.

17. Yes. The police will likely be more successful in getting the girl to |
|
admit doing it. A police report may also help you recover any costs associated with the clean up.

18. Speaking as an older, wiser and now-reformed juvenile delinquent... |
|
I'd hate to think where I'd be today if I got busted by cops every time the neighborhood parents caught me doing something. Arrest does nothing foor reform, and usually has the opposite affect. I'd call their parents. Even if you have no proof, it will create suspicion in their parental minds, and make them watch their kids a little closer. But I certainly wouldn't call the cops. Early arrests send kids down the road to later arrests. And arrests as an adult can ruin your life forever.

|
just don't want them to do it again. There are a lot of folks in my community to whom the $75 to power wash the house is a significant expense. We happen to own one, so my husband just used that. But, it was still an awful mess.

7. well, if the parents are uninterested in resolving this |

you'll need to move on.
By 'move on' I mean 'move on' to petty revenge, like filling out subscription cards for embarassing magazines with their info.

15. I might suggest that if you escalate this situation |
|
you will be targeted for years to come.......
Sometimes it's best to chalk this sort of thing up to random, irritating yet non violent vandalism and let it go.

16. My only concern, frankly, is that if this was just a random |
|
event, they will continue to do it and could cause some real property damage to someone.
And, as a parent, I would want to know if my kid did something like this.

22. This is going to sound really sneaky but it worked for my neighbor |
|
she had a similar story so her daughter went to school on Monday, the event happened friday night and she sees the girl with some of her friends and she said something like--"You won't believe what happened to my house Friday night, it got egged and now my parents are going to call the police, my neighbor said she could id the person who did it if she saw a picture of them" that neighbor being me and i saw the girl that did, anyhow they did more than egg but you get the picture. Ok so within a few days the girl fessed up because she was really worried about the police, her parents punished for a week and made her pay for the damage she did.

But unfortunately, the big mouth who lives here with me already told her that we knew it was her. Right after she called her butt ugly.
Now she has her extensive network working on finding out who the accomplices were.

If it was me I would call them. Tell them that you just heard it but that you would like to know if it is true. You aren't going to press charges or sue them you just want to know and thought they might too.
If they are assholes about tell them that they are being assholes about it.
THEN clean and load the guns.

27. There was an incident like that recently... |
|
involving three girls in my daughter's grade. They intentionally targeted the home of one of my daughter's friends and egged the house and car. Also, destroyed their mailbox.
The police were contacted and the girls had to perform community service. One of the girls wrote a letter of apology, but nothing from the other two.
I don't know if it went on the girl's records or not, but it did seem to be a reasonable resolution. The homeowner was never compensated for the damage, though.
If the homeowner had only contacted the parents, I'm certain that she would have been ignored.

29. Egging is just so destructive. |
|
We get toilet papered fairly regularly. The ONLY time it was a problem was last Labor Day when they leaned on the doorbell at 1:15 to announce their work. It woke up my FIL who fell. They also left the gate open and the dog got out and I spent two hours wandering around in the dark trying to find her. (I did, she was under the neighbor's porch the whole time)
TP'ing is no big deal. Even that time when they used 288 rolls. Egging a house or a car can cause permanent damage.

I'm not sure kids realize how much damage it does to cars and siding.
In the case I mentioned, the homeowner is a single mom living alone with her daughter. I know she initially found it frightening as well.
So, Midlodemocrat, have you decided yet what you're going to do?
