What older relative do you remember fondly from childhood? |
|
I only knew one grandparent, and he was kind of an aloof, distant character.
I had an uncle who annnoyed the crap out of me when I was a kid, he used to tease me relentlessly. The worst part was that I had a strong family resemblance to him, which people never failed to point out, and it pained me endlessly because I knew it was true!
It was pretty much just my granddad and the one uncle, not a lot of extended family. No serious mentors among older relatives, for me.

1. My sick brain read the title of this thread as... |
|
"What older relative do you remember fondling you from childhood"
I need therapy.

I need to join you in therapy because I thought it was the same.

if there is one family figure from my childhood that I really do remember fondly it would have to be my grandma. She would watch me all day while my parents worked, walk to me to school and back, she was the best.
My favourite thing to do with her was sit in here big LA-Z-BOY chair and eat cold green beans out of a can while reading this Bunny book, that was actually shaped like a bunny, that I would never ever get tired of.

4. I have several, but one of my fondest was my great-grandmother |
|
on my mother's side. She was a woman of deep faith (in the best sense of the word), who read the bible to me, and who gave me the idea of Jesus, God, Christianity, and faith that I've held all my life. That idea is of love, compassion, carring for those who are less fortunate, those in need, those who are hurting, of being kind and respectful to others, and not sitting in judgement just because someone is different than me.
She gave me a great gift.

6. My mother's mother never had an unkind word for me |

or for anyone else that I recall. I'm sure she must have had her human frailties; but I never saw them. She remains saintly in my eyes and heart.

great-uncles and great-aunts and my granparents on my father's side. They were Italian and so much fun! I remember so much laughter and fun when they were around.
When I went to see "My Big Fat Greek Wedding" and they showed the seen of all the old men at the reception gathered around the bar having a good time, it reminded me so much of them that I started crying so hard I barely saw the rest of the movie.
I loved them all and they loved me. I wish I could have some of those moments back.

8. My Dad's father, Grandpa Honey |
|
Honey was what everyone called him because he had bright blond hair until the day he died at 87. He had a pet squirrel, Mr Grey, and an Irish Setter, Rusty, and the dog and squirrel played and hung out together.
