THIS IS THE OFFICIAL "I LOVE STEELY DAN" THREAD
I need to counter this culture of Steely Dan hatred with a Steely Dan appreciation. They may not be in my top 10 of all time favorite bands but I adore Steely Dan and it was probably one of the best non-LZ concerts I've ever attend.

If you don't appreciate their music then you need to turn off American Idol. Steely Dan was the tops and I'm proud to admit I'm a big fan of their music!! I'd have to say that Pretzel Logic is one of my favorite SD albums with Aja a close second

13. Me too
Great songs, very subtle arrangements. F@#$ing hard to play! My brother (who has an even better ear than I do) and I used to have a little band, and we did "Doctor Wu" off Katy Lied. It's real tricky.

Of course, clever doesn't necessarily mean brilliant. The things that impress me about Steely Dan, like the amazing chord change in the outro to "King of the World" (or the equally amazing change in the outro to "West of Hollywood" a quarter of a century later), may not float your boat.

But it's hard to think of a band that does such a great job of writing really appealing songs about really ghastly subjects. Every Steely Dan record is as seductively brutal a reality check as, say (since we've had a Don Henley thread today), the Eagles' entire career, group and solo combined.
