6. Are you nuts!?
Maybe not everyone can appreciate the subtleties of my band and maybe some are offended by the change in direction since its last CD. I think if you ignore their eccentric lifestyles and focus on the product, you will see that the band I like does indeed rock while yours sounds like a chorus of strangled cats. After all, their record of drug use, violence, venereal disease, burglary and corpse mutilation has no bearing on their music. Anyone who likes your band is obviously either tone deaf or comes from a long line of inbred neanderthals.

9. The first part, yes. The second part, no.
Just to step out of sarcasm mode for a minute, it sucks that I constantly have to explain to people I know that just because I say that artist X sucks, that doesn't mean that I think you are inferior for liking artist X. Why they jump to this conclusion consistently I will never know.

13. Because they feel inferior when someone questions their taste
Therefore they assume that's your intent. When -you- question -my- taste, for example, I'm all "fuckin deadhead was baptised in bongwater 'n' shit." That's healthy.

54. It was a guy, and I have NO idea who the band is.
ALl I know is that they're Brazilian (ahem!) and that the clip was filmed/taped in 1973, right around the time KISS was becoming a regional sensation - so it's doubtful that these guys would have known about KISS's makeup. That, of course, makes it all the stranger.

Plus, the tune is incredible; like a very odd, tropical version of Yes's "Your Move."

When I found this clip, I nearly jumped out of my chair.

17. I tend to ignore ANY Band X is great / Band Y sux threads
It just never fails to amaze me how people here, who are supposed to be so "progressive" and "open-minded", have NO freaking clue that taste in music is 100% subjective and is in no way objectively debatable. And yet you'll see these dumb threads ("U2 is the best band ever!", "U2 is totally lame!!") that have more than a hundred posts.

You know, if people devoted the same energy to debate whether Brussels sprouts are tasty and/or good for you, maybe there'd be better nutrition among the posters in this forum.

I know you all have bands/performers that you love, and regardless of how I feel about them, I'm sincerely glad that you love them. I have bands/performers that I love, and you probably don't like a lot of them. But that's life.

19. Naw, I disagree that it's 100% subjective
Edited on Thu Apr-27-06 11:28 AM by jpgray
There's no way to argue, for example, that Britney Spears's oeuvre is as diverse as, say, the Beatles'. The case just can't be made. Conversely, there's no way to argue that a composition by Connor Oberst shows the same contrapuntal inventiveness as a composition by Bach. These are outlandish examples between artists no one would really compare, but this is just to say one can make some more or less objective comparisons. As for "better" or "worse," most music hipsters would assign more value to say Bob Dylan than to Starland Vocal Band. Doesn't mean you have to think that way, but a majority of opinion amongst hipsters normally has some value when I look for new music, whereas if things were 100% subjective it would have zero value whatsoever.

42. But then, Britney Spears fans LOVE Britney's music
You and I may look askance at it, but she gives her fans exactly what they want. She meets their demands completely.

Who are we, really, to look down on them for that?

I find much of Bach totally boring, despite his "contrapuntal inventiveness". But I do see how people who specifically look for and appreciate contrapuntal inventiveness in their music would like Bach. I do not begrudge them that. I think that's great.

I'm just saying that it's pointless to say that someone else's favorite musical act is bad or that one's own favorite musical act is superior. It really all amounts to a bunch of pointless navel gazing.

47. That's still bullshit
Edited on Thu Apr-27-06 12:15 PM by jpgray
If I didn't listen to people who said "that's bad" and "that's good," I'd have to wade through reams and reams of dreck to get to the music I enjoy. Whereas using the opinions of people I trust, I'll generally but not always get into something interesting--and while it's not the last word if everyone whose opinion I respect says something is awful, it tends to be correct enough of the time to be useful. But this isn't simply true of music--nobody would wade through all online poetry zines to find good verse today, one would head to a nice review that has high literary and artistic standards. Those standards won't always be right (cf. Billy Collins) but they tend to keep out people with terrible skill and zero talent. It's never the last word, but there does tend to be a consensus on quality, and if it's overwhelming it's usually right.

56. there is also a consensus on popularity
does that mean if IT is overwhelming, it is usually wrong? What if the consensus is created through a process of education/propaganda? That is, those who disagree with the conventional wisdom are either hounded out of the group, summarily banished and scoffed at, or otherwise made to conform to the CW.
To return to your Spears vs. Beatles example, yes, you can objectively say that one group is more diverse than the other, but you cannot objectively define diverse as an over-riding value. The same with contrapuntal inventiveness. You are just finding reviewers who agree with your tastes. It does not mean you and the reviewers are objectively right.

65. THANK you, hvojvt. Exactly.
You said it better than I every could have.

I have found that if I want to find a new album by some new musical act I've never heard of, it helps me ENORMOUSLY if someone knows the acts I do like and then suggests new ones based on those tastes. Just because a bunch of high-paid media critics like Band X doesn't mean I will like them. In fact, 99% of the time I've found that I don't.

68. No-one's saying anything about being "objectively right."
What's being said is that taste is NOT 100% subjective. That leaves a lot of grey-space, and your false binary did nothing to even address the discussion.

And comparing friends sharing a common taste in music to a propagandic enculturation scheme where outsiders and dissidents are scorned or banished is just ridiculous.

50. On the contrary
The band I like is made up of stellar musicians who have amassed a groundbreaking body of work unrivalled in the world of modern music. The band you like, on the other hand, is made up of the worst sort of mainstream musical hacks who have blighted the name of modern music with their dull, insipid and completely derivative so-called "art." Their preciousness and well-documented bad behavior are particularly irritating, as is their proclivity for aligning themselves with their betters, hoping for reflected glory. In addition, their name is both inane and an embarassment to its source.
