1. Oasis by a mile
At least Becker and Fagen are musicians. The Gallagher brothers are stupid, drunken chavs who somehow learned to string three chords together.

28. I've got no problem with substance-assisted rock
Trying to use Oasis as an example is the wrong hill to die on, though. We're not talking about the Master Musicians of Jajouka going into a hash trance, we're talking about two yobs who wish they were the Beatles getting too plastered to play gigs.

2. The Dan rocks!
I don't dislike Oasis, but give me the Dan anyday. I'm sick and tired of seeing these posts bashing them. I already got flamed for playing the "musical elitist" card in another anti-Dan thread, but tough shit, I'm playing it again: I think the musical tastes here are one of the few (if not, the only) things that stereotype liberals as elitists. I like many music which is not cool (as evidenced by my owning every Steely Dan album, which is probably unusual for a 25-year old). Everyone is entitled to their own opinions, but I am not a lesser person for liking overly commercial pop-rock. Different types of music groove different types of people (different strokes for different folks. Sly Stone, anybody?)

BTW, Donald Fagen referred to the Bush Administration as a "thuggish cult". He can't be that bad of a person. :)

6. People who hop on a baseless band-bashing bandwagon suck
Edited on Thu Apr-27-06 05:41 PM by Bombtrack
I really never saw you for being so horde-thinking JohnKleeb.

Oasis have like 3 times as many great songs as all but a few bands. I really doubt you fucking piggybackers have even listened for yourselves to their catalogue.

Steely Dan are just shitty because they aren't rock and roll. They're for fat upper-middle class music snobs who never get laid, and I'm glad that although I've listened to their albums they've never had a song that's worth remembering the name of.

Cool! I'm now a fat, upper-middle class music snob (I think I just moved up on social status). And you support Clark? NOW who's delusional.

And yes, take it from ANOTHER musician (30 years and counting), Steely Dan follows Traffic in the Jazz Fusion department.

Pssst. Clark was never a real candidate. He'll never be a real candidate. You guys are like LaRouche supporters. Delusional to the end. LOL!

14. anything with Jazz as a prefix is music to be an unfun asshole to
but I guess the fact I haven't scoured to find a more meaningful avatar than the candidate I'd most like to be the nominee makes my music observations invalid.

..But of course neither was Stan Getz, John Coltrane, Bach and Rachmanihoff.

Edited on Thu Apr-27-06 08:44 PM by JohnKleeb
I was being silly for the sake of silly. I've heard some Oasis by the way and I don't think they're as bad as people say they are. I mean its not like they're the backstreet boys or NSYNC. I should have posted in advance that I had no hate or love for either band.

31. Oasis rules
Yeah so they've made some crap albums. Their first two albums and their b-sides from that time (3 albums worth) are better than most bands entire output, and since then they've had plenty of good songs even if they're more inconsistent.

People who say they just ripped off the Beatles haven't even listened to most of Oasis' back catalogue. Liking both bands is not mutually exclusive. The Beatles are my favorite band and there really aren't that many Oasis songs that sound much like the Beatles - Whatever (a non-album single that's reminiscent if "All You Need is Love"), She's Electric (a silly novelty tune), Who Feels Love?, and the intro to Don't Look Back in Anger. And I'll admit that some of Noel's name-dropping Beatles tunes on the album Be Here Now was a little excessive.

But they've always sounded to me more like Beatles by way of early '70s glam rock. Their rockers are a lot more like T. Rex, David Bowie, and Slade than anything by the Beatles.

As for Steely Dan, I've never really listened to them so I'll refrain from answering.
