I arrived yesterday at around noon and slept off the jet lag so I consider today to be my first "real" day here. First of all, I love love love this city. The food lives up to expectation and the wine is CHEAP!!! (which means I've been drinking so keep this in mind when reading this ;))
The people are gorgeous (because they're confident), the couples in the cafes are romantic and the sights are wonderful. Unfortunately I've only seen one poodle in a restaurant and I didn't get a picture of it. :( I was hoping to see more dogs in restaurants but so far its been very rare.
We took a ton of pictures today so I'll post one or two later. For now we're doing the usual tourist thing which is wonderful. They have a Di vinci Code tour which I'm tempted to take because the book was such a fun read. I haven't decided yet.
Like I said, I'll post pics very soon. In the meantime, if you've been to another country and want to share your pictures, this is the perfect thread to do so! :bounce:

2. I would advise against taking the Dan Brown tour |
|
Such tours inevitably are even more likely to turn out to be tourist traps.

Listen, you're so right about everyone being beautiful because they're confident. They know they're living in the most beautiful city on the planet, and so they have nothing to prove to anybody. That's one reason why public displays of affection are so common there. And I took a picture of a dog in a restaurant, too! The waiter had served it a dish of food with a flourish. It was so cute!
I believe my dad in I were in Cafe Deux Magots when that happened. Anyway, if you haven't tried them yet, You've GOT to try escargot. I ate escargot with my brother and his friend Mikel, and I did it on a dare after two glasses of white wine. I watched Mikel try one and when I tried them they were DELICIOUS.
There's a really small and festive street on the Left Bank that's always crowded with playful restauranteurs. They shout and smile at you, and if you're an American, they go,"Aaah!" and speak English with you. I hate it when people say Parisians are snobs. I only ran into two unpleasant people there, and I was in summer school there a month and a half.
Try to make it to Shakespeare & Company, if you can. It's a great used bookstore. There's some history behind it. Back in WWII when the Germans occupied Paris, a Nazi came up to the owner and wanted her to save a book for him and some other Nazis. She was scared out of her mind but determined; the next day, she'd found hiding places for EVERY book in the store and it appeared to be empty- of books and people, when they returned.
Also, you'll love the Muse D'Orsay if you go. I spent six hours there. What am I doing? Get off the computer right now!! Hop to, you lucky thing! :D

6. Awesome, but i've got a VERY IMPORTANT tip for you: |

DO NOT, under ANY circumstances, go into any restaurants in the latin quarter with someone standing outside trying to persuade you to come in. Ideally ignore the latin quarter altogether. I ignored my better judgment and went into one anyway, and they tried to pass off a terrible salmon terrine as salmon tar tar. The stuff they serve in the latin quarter isn't fit for a poodle (by French standards at least) and IMO they're all a bunch of fucking con-artists trying to take advantage of tourists who don't know any better! They should be shot. :grr::mad::nuke:
</rant>
If they don't have a menu in english, you will be more than fine.
I don't want to rain on your parade, but I'd like to try and spare you from the unpleasantness I had. It sorta ruined the last two days of my trip.
Enjoy! :hi:

8. Musee d'Orsay, go to Musee d'Orsay |

Edited on Thu Apr-27-06 06:47 PM by uppityperson
the Lourve is ok, but Musee d'Orsay is GREAT and doable. Went with UPJr and he left me because I kept tearing up when I'd walk into a room of, say, Van Gogh, or Degas, a room of Degas, Millet, Manet, Monet, etc etc etc. I'd go into another room and there would be Rodin, and around the corner Pisarro! Glad to hear you are having fun.
