Here lies one who loved us and whom we loved
(No matter how deep my sleep I shall hear you, and not all the power of death can keep my spirit from wagging a grateful tail)- Tao House 12-17-1940

...Many DU'ers have lost pets. Some recently, some a long time ago.

I wanted to thank all DU'ers for the kindness that they show to all those in suffering. It is with this in mind that I post this tribute to
Robb's dear Krishna
and
Quanda's dear PJ. You made your humans happy and touched us all here at DU.

I know that there are other pics out there, so lets see em!

God bless (mdmc) Honey, (u4ic lost her bird a while ago), (seattlegirl) Shadow, (goneoffshore) Mip, (Allycats kitty), (Atomickitten's kitty), (Revcheesehead) Roo, (Antfarm's pet), (Squeech) Andy, (Brigid's kitty), (zorra and ulysses long lost pets). I know that many more have suffered. I pray for you all, and all your pets.

Peace and low stress! :cry::hi::)

18. Louie out camping with us & the 90 Pound Hound
a few months before his death

He was a shelter kitty my daughter adopted. He loved the big dog we got and he really enjoyed his big camping trip and visit back to his Tucson friends. His soul left us two years ago next week. But we ponder that he may have returned in a fresh hull as this little gem, who seems to have taken up exactly where Louie left off, same strange ideocryancies... who knows?

The 90 Pound Hound thinks so too

He loved old Louie and he named little Spike. They are best pals... again?

27. Sigh
Nice thread. Thank you.

I never wanted a dog, but Andy was such a trouper, such a sweetheart, he carved an indelible niche for himself in the household. He gladdened our days. Least I could do for him was gladden his-- especially in his declining years, to beguile him out of his bewilderment at whichever of his faculties weren't working too well.

I don't have a picture, but if you google "Tibetan spaniel," he was a fine example of the breed.

He remains in some inexplicable sense a part of my life. If there is any such thing as heaven, I'd rather encounter Andy in it than 72 virgins.

A Parting Prayer

Dear Lord, please open your gates
and call St. Francis
to come escort this beloved companion
across the Rainbow Bridge.

Assign her to a place of honor,
for she has been a faithful servant
and has always done her best to please me.

Bless the hands that send her to you,
for they are doing so in love and compassion,
freeing her from pain and suffering.

Grant me the strength not to dwell on my loss.
Help me remember the details of her life
with the love she has shown me.
And grant me the courage to honor her
by sharing those memories with others.

Let her remember me as well
and let her know that I will always love her.
And when it's my time to pass over into your paradise,
please allow her to accompany those
who will bring me home.

Thank you, Lord,
for the gift of her companionship
and for the time we've had together.

And thank you, Lord,
for granting me the strength
to give her to you now.

Amen.

37. Ms Marble

April 1989 - November 2004

The best damn cat I ever knew. She had a crush on Imhotep, who now lives with us (he lived outside when they met).

It still wrecks me to even type about it. She'd been with me since she was 10 months old, and had her only litter in my closet, wrapped in my flannel jammies.

On the night before, the other cats held a vigil around the box where she was sleeping. Weirdest thing I've ever seen.

38. Cats just "know" things. When our puppy Jessie got very, very ill.
we had to take her in for an emergency surgery to remove 30+ bladder stones. For the three days that she lay in her bed after she came home our cat Merlin stayed right by her bed...sniffing her head now and then. Waking up and (I kid you not) caring for, and cleaning her when she whimpered in her sleep. It was a sight to behold. I am so sorry about Ms Marble.

60. Remember the scene in Star Trek movie when Spock touched McCoy
and said "Remember"? I think my ol Smudge did that during the wee hours of the morning she died. She slept tucked against me, like usual. The big marmalade, Havoc, got warm and moved to the floor during the night. Louie was on his usual spot by the spare pillow.

Smudge got up about 4AM and laid next to Louie, draping a tiny leg over him (she was rather small). It was odd to see as she was tolerant of Louie but never showed him much open affection. She stayed next to him for a time, then carefully moved to the floor and her best bud, Havoc. She laid down and put her head and a paw on his ample rump and purred for a time.

The sight & sound of those two long time pals together made me very sleepy again, and try as I did to stay awake, knowing her end was near, I fell back into a deep, restorative sleep.

Woke about dawn and she wasn't in the room with me. She had moved into the living room, tucked into the seculsion under a tall love seat. She was already in a coma.

I had scheduled the day off due to needing to attend a memorial service for my best friend's sister later in the day. My precious Smudge, who had spent every day of her nearly 21 years working to meet my needs and take good care of me, well, it was like she knew that would be a good day to die.

She saw me through most of raising my daughter. She saw me throught the divorce from hell and all the crazy emotions and growth that followed. She saw me through to meeting Havocdad. She seemed to know I was in good hands and she could take her rest.

She laid her tiny paw on each of the other cats. She imparted special messages. Each one of them took up some of her 'chores' of supervising the household. They split her loving tasks and took them on with great dedication.

She laid her tiny paw on each of them. I know she said "Remember...."

Seven years later, as I tell you the tale, I am sobbing. I still miss her so, but her soul showed me that love continues after the vessle breaks.

Five years ago, Havoc left peacefully. Louie was so sweet in the last weeks, when Havoc had trouble seeing. Louie coaxed and led him. When Havoc would be too tired to groom, Louie watched as I would take a damp cloth to the old marmalade cat. Then, Louie took over grooming. Havoc, always proud and gentlemanly, was happy to let his protege look after him in his last days. Gracious as always, he took the affection well.

He spent some time out in the spring grass and sunshine with me and a very young friend. Havoc loved kids. His last days were time to say good bye to some little pals.

We put him 'neath the honeysuckle bush where he liked to rest and watch the birds. Wayward Daughter left a pillow someone made her when she was little. It was one he loved to rest on while she did homework or drew. She left the pillow with me for when her best friend would need it...

I didn't know how I would ever sleep again. Havoc had taken Smudge's duty of tucking me in at night. How would I sleep now?

That night, Louie came up on the bed very carefully. He put his paws on me like his predecessors had always done. He purred me to sleep then found his own spot to rack out.

Remember...

Smudge: July 1978 - January 1999
Havoc: March 1986- May 2001
Louie: ? - May 2004

Louie was a shelter cat. Daughter assured he finished his life happy and well.

They remember...

42. Here, if you haven't seen it before, I hope you like it:
A man and his dog were walking along a road. The man was enjoying the scenery, when it suddenly occurred to him that he was dead. He remembered dying, and that the dog walking beside him had been dead for years.

He wondered where the road was leading them.

After a while, they came to a high, white stone wall along one side of the road. It looked like fine marble.
At the top of a long hill, it was broken by a tall arch that glowed in the sunlight. When he was standing before it he saw a magnificent gate in the arch that looked like Mother of Pearl, and the street that led to the gate looked like pure gold.

He and the dog walked toward the gate, and as he got closer, he saw a man at a desk to one side.
When he was close enough, he called out, "Excuse me, where are we?"
"This is Heaven, sir," the man answered.

"Wow! Would you happen to have some water?" the man asked.
"Of course, sir. Come right in, and I'll have some ice water brought right up." The man gestured, and the gate began to open.

"Can my friend," gesturing toward his dog, "come in, too?" the traveler asked.
"I'm sorry, sir, but we don't accept pets."

The man thought a moment and then turned back toward the road and continued the way he had been going with his dog.

After another long walk, and at the top of another long hill, he came to a dirt road which led through a farm gate that looked as if it had never been closed. There was no fence. As he approached the gate, he saw a man inside, leaning against a tree and reading a book.

"Excuse me!" he called to the reader. "Do you have any water?"
"Yeah, sure, there's a pump over there". The man pointed to a place that couldn't be seen from outside the gate. "Come on in."

"How about my friend here?" the traveler gestured to the dog.
"There should be a bowl by the pump." They went through the gate, and sure enough, there was an old fashioned hand pump with a bowl beside it.

The traveler filled the bowl and took a long drink himself, then he gave some to the dog. When they were full, he and the dog walked back toward the man who was standing by the tree waiting for them.

"What do you call this place?" the traveler asked.
"This is Heaven," was the answer.
"Well, that's confusing," the traveler said. "The man down the road said that was Heaven, too."

"Oh, you mean the place with the gold street and pearly gates?
Nope. That's Hell."

"Doesn't it make you mad for them to use your name like that?"

"No. I can see how you might think so, but we're just happy that they screen out the folks who'll leave their best friends behind."

57. Koko and Ginger
Both passed away last fall. They were sisters and after Jinger died I don't think Koko wanted to go on without her.

of Pixie or Copper.

I think I only have one kitten photo of Copper. The others are missing.

And Jojo from long, long ago when I was a kid. Damn.

I miss them.

64. What sweet people you all are...
My black silky baby's obituary. Thanks for letting me share.

Mr. Spitz, boon companion of **** died after short illness at the age of 14 on March 26, 2005, with loving assistance in Charlotte, North Carolina.
Mr. Spitz was born in late February 1991, to a feral alley cat in Yonkers, NY. He was adopted along with his litter mate, Dusty, by his loving parents from the Elmsford Animal Shelter in Westchester County about five weeks later.
As a kitten, Mr. Spitz exhibited uncommon athleticism. He did back flips for his own amusement and would fetch and return a crumpled up paper wad up to thirty times in a row. His physical fearlessness got him into trouble from time to time, but he was lucky. When birds teased him to jump over the deck railing resulting in a two story free fall, the only injury Mr. Spitz suffered was a couple of chipped nails.
Mr. Spitz was an avid Technology Cat. He loved surfing the Internet and would race to the computer at the first bong of start up. He especially loved sitting on his mommy’s lap and watching the progress bar stream while she clicked on different DU threads. Mr. Spitz was the only one (besides Vicki) who had access to her e-mail password.
Once so renowned for his highly-strung nature that he was called “The Barney Fife of Cats”, Mr. Spitz experienced a drastic turnaround in personality once he was allowed to explore “outside”. He stalked and chased a wide variety of bugs, bees, and lizards at his new home in North Carolina. He rounded out his days with dust baths, flower sniffing, and long naps in the sun. He devoted his nights to torturing mice.
Mr. Spitz was a petite example of a classic Halloween Cat with black silky fur and ravishing Bette Davis eyes. He enjoyed having chats with his favorite people and excelled at both giving and getting affection. Mr. Spitz will be missed at our home forever.

With deepest sympathy to all you you.

77. Here's Cheyenne, our crazy-ass motherfucker of a German Shepherd.
I miss that dog. She had to be put down two years ago. I miss having a dog. The lab we have on weekends does not count. That dog is lame as hell.

82. Beautiful Friends...
thank you all for sharing your pictures and stories. Thanks
to xchrom, havocmom and rustydog for the special poems and
story. I work with a Fundi who has already chastised me and
quoted a Bible reference to prove animals don't go to heaven.
My God loves all creatures.

83. Bless your little heart, mdmc. A clarification:
Krishna lives on, actually mourning her brother Bodhi, who left us:
We three, Bodhi in the front, Krish in the back:

...and Bodhi:

RIP. Thanks. :)
