Why do veggie burgers look like hamburgers?
Edited on Fri Apr-28-06 02:05 PM by auburngrad82
Edited to correct the fact that veggie burgers don't actually look like meat, they look like meat patties. My fault.

To me, if you're going to eat your veggies, they should LOOK LIKE VEGGIES.

Don't even get me started about non-alcoholic beer...

1. Shaped like meat?
Aren't they just shaped in round patties? That's not a meat shape. It's a fit-the-bun shape!

4. Ok, then. If you know everything, where does spam come from???
The Spaminal must be one ugly creature.

And boneless chickens just seem gross, oozing around like an amoeba...

18. Remember the Far Side cartoon "Boneless Chicken Ranch?"
Very much like "The Persistence of Memory" watches.

3. They're not. Neither are real hamburgers.
They're just round.

Now those little veggie "chicken wings", that are supposed to look like a drumstick...those things are weird.

10. I am a vegetarian
and I don't mind a little teasing now and then, as long as it is not mean-spirited. This does not seem to be. But be ready, because I can give as good as I take.

I do agree, the meatless meat is odd. I like the Morningstar Buffalo Chicken, but still weird...

I frequent a Vegetarian Chinese place that has veggie shrimp that looks like shrimp, and they do a "chicken" dish that has the " faux chicken" shaped like a chicken leg. I don't like those!

20. Because they're a pretence.
If you look at cultures where vegetarianism is thoroughly engrained (e.g. India) they make no pretence - they just make food which happens to consist of vegetables. When you take a 'culture' which is based around over consumption of meat - and inparticular of pointlessly processed and reshaped 'meat', then to "fit in" the vegetarian substitutes have to be forced into this pretence.

For the record, I'm an omnivore (but I do spend portions of my time eating a vegetarian diet, and have spent time on a vegan diet before as well) and I think that some of the bestest folk round here are vegetarian or vegan - being so in a culture like that of most of the modern west is very difficult and they deserve admiration, even if the mass-produced crap which the "food" companies provide for them is as bad as the mass-produced crap which the "food" companies try to force down our throats too.
