Why the hate for Steely Dan? |
|
They were an impressive group - excellent songwriting and very snarky lyrics.
They did make their play on many AM stations in the 70's, but then again so did the Stones.

I love Steely Dan and most 70s prog rock for that matter.

2. Great "snarky" lyrics. The critics are just a few malcontents. |

Not everyone on DU has good musical taste.
I like your use of the word "snarky," btw.

I have a friend who ran their fanzine, MetalLeg, who managed to get me a VIP pass at a show. Met Becker and Fagan and they were both just really cool and laid back. They were in high spirits because it was the last show of the tour. Becker is funny as hell. Fagan is more introverted. It was a real honor to met them as their music has had a powerful impact on my life and it took me through some harrowing times when I was an adolescent.
Fagan's new one is a must have.

I met him in Chicago and he gave me his unused ticket for their 1993 show (the first concert after that long hiatus) because I was a fan (I also developed the pics that he shot from that show). He told me to print extras for myself. What a nice guy!

10. 'Cause they're not some fringe indy group who's been |
|
suppressed by "the Man"? There seems to be some serious vitriol around here for so-called "popular" groups--as if liberals are too good for those who made it, and need to support only the starving--albeit talented--musicians out there. I call bull. I'm all for helping those who haven't had "the break"--and probably won't get it, ever--but, contrary to common progressive opinion, not all who are or were "popular" suck. Just look at the 'Stones, the Beatles, Elton John, and, yes, the 'Dan.

11. I think some people look at them as being of the same ilk as |
|
The Eagles and Rush: extremely overproduced. I love them, myself. Some types of music are meant to be slick.

13. I'd rather listen to a thousand hours of the 'Dan and The Eagles |
|
Edited on Fri Apr-28-06 03:55 PM by WritingIsMyReligion
than even one hour of, say, today's country-western. There are far worse so-called "musicians" to rag on than Don Fagen and Walter Becker, or Don Henley and Timothy Schmitt.

I don't hate them, but I sure don't understand why people who otherwise appear to have musical taste can tolerate their lite jazz music. Kenny G with vocals.

24. Mmm, because "Reelin' in the Years", with that guitar, is "lite jazz." |
|
And Steve Gadd's drum solo at the end of "Aja." An absolute bit of "lite jazz." Yeah.
;)

27. The stuff is far from Kenny G my friend |
|
The guitar solo on Aja...or the solo on Third World Man...or the syncopated bead from The Fez...
They truly introduced jazz concepts into rock...whereas Kenny G just played innocuous pap.
