9. I see your point and I understand the necessity for some people.

I hope the Indonesian people drove slowly and carefully, and took the kids only when necessary - ie, to the doctor or whatever. I think the reason this photo disturbs is because it (apparently) is not a necessary trip, but a day at the beach. And what is more disturbing - to me anyway - is the fact that both adults are wearing helmets in case they get into an accident, but the child is completely unprotected. In an accident the adults will probably be banged up but at least have a good shot at living, whereas the little one will be completely ravaged and has a great likelihood of death and/or permanent damage. It reads as though the child is an inconvenience to them... but not so much that they will allow her to deprive them of a day of recreation. Even if it means placing her life and safety in jeopardy.

I actually saw someone riding a bike with a kitchen table balanced on their head!

They have a helmet law in Indonesia, but many people can't afford helmets, so they wear BUCKETS on their head.

I also grew up in a time before car seats, and seat belts were not automatically worn.

12. Right. I'm glad you made the point, it is certainly relevant.

My heart goes out to those poor in Indonesia - and in the U.S. and everywhere else - who have no choice but to place themselves and their family in dangerous situations simply to make it through the day. I have no place to judge them.
