Woo-hoo! KEEPING UP APPEARANCES is starting now...
Starring Patricia Routledge as my favorite ruthless British social climber.

:applause:

2. "The Boo-KAAY residence, the lady of the house speaking..."
Hyacinth reaches me as part Miss Manners, part Martha Stewart, and part Draco Malfoy. She's a real hoot.

3. So many nice hats.

There's nothing like watching Hyacinth physically moving people around like chess pieces. I've tried to imagine what her upbringing was like--what kind of a family produces someone as fiercely anal-retentive as Hyacinth, as nymphomanical as Rose, and passive-agressive as Daisy?

I'd always suspected that Daisy and Onslow HAD to get married. When I first saw the episode about their granddaughter's christening, I felt like a genius, especially since that's the only episode where Daisy actually stands up to Hyancinth. Violet seems to be the closest thing to normal in the family. Her only problems seem to be having a cross-dressing husband and a sister who'd sell her soul to BE her.

4. Violet? Are you kidding?
She's as close to a drama addict as you can get! (only Rose stands ahead in line)

They're all escapists, really...Hyacinth with her social climbing, Rose with her 'gentleman friends', Daisy with her romance books, Violet with her relationship dramas, Daddy living out past glories in his head...

Interestingly, I've never heard her mother referred to. She probably took off with the milkman all those years ago.

8. Well, I did say that she "SEEMS" to be "CLOSEST" to normal
Edited on Mon May-01-06 12:41 AM by rocknation
Violet should definitely do less whining about her husband. But if crossdressing is his worst quality, I say she's the luckiest of the bunch!

As for their mother, she's deceased. After one of Rose's romantic mishaps, she wanted to kill herself and be buried in her mother's wedding dress!

10. Right!
I forgot about that...the only reference, I believe, to her mother.

I love when Daisy starts to get horny, her legs start vibrating. What a wonderful actor's choice.

Personally, I think Daisy is closer to normal than the rest. You can always refuse her coffee, but get near Violet during one of her and Bruce's fights, and you're likely to be decapitated by something she's thrown...

12. Lucky for us she decided against pursuing a singing career.
Edited on Mon May-01-06 11:04 AM by rocknation
While enduring one of Hyacinth's vocal performances, my sister informed me that Routledge "really can sing, you know." I said, "Well, that's obvious--only a great singer can sing as BADLY as she does as WELL as she does!"
