1. My dear L A Woman!
He sure as heck doesn't sound like any liberal I've ever heard of.....

Maybe he's trying to redefine the word?

Anyhow, you did good, putting him in his place!

:yourock:

2. There're degrees to everything
He could be 'liberal' on most things but have more in common with the bad guys -- sorry, I mean neocons -- when it comes to immigration...or abortion...or Creationism...or whatever.

And there are certainly left-wing nutjobs, though the Right seems to have the bulk of the monopoly on such in this country at this time.

3. I think there is
My roomie calls herself a Democrat, yet other than insisting that gays should have equal rights she spews nothing but neocon talking points.

Close the borders!
End welfare!
Nuke the Middle East!
This is a Christian Nation and anybody who doesn't like it can get the f*ck out!
The reason kids are such a$$holes nowadays is because they took prayer out of public schools!
This is America, learn to speak English!

etc, etc.

4. Have you ever met my brother?....
...He's misogynistic, sometimes racist, sometimes a bigot, yet economically, he's a communist. Go figure.

5. Obviously you've never been in GD
:eyes:

Seriously though, it goes back to what I was saying in another thread earlier: there is more to politics than just left-wing/liberal and right-wing/conservative. He could be progressive on certain issues, conservative on others. Even within a given ideology, there can be vast differences.

7. All political labels are simplifications
We all think around issues (at least those of who think about things) come to differing conclusions - anything else would be group-think and slavish obedience to others. So another individual may have several political positions which one considers to be irreconcilable - whilst they will probably consider some of one's own positions to be irreconcilable.

11. I onced dated a woman
who was liberal on just about every issue out there, except she would not accept inter-racial relationships... she almost broke up with me when she found out I had dated some non-white women prior to dating her. Obviously, it didn't last since I'm now married to an Asian women... and my first marriage was to a Jewish-Irish combo.

12. Critical thinking
Ultimately that's the difference between a liberal and anybody else.

You can talk the talk-- I was thinking of P.J. O'Rourke, whose schtick is conservative but who likes to party and talk dirty, kind of a South Park con with an earlier copyright date. But I think if you feel like you can lump everybody else into an interest group, we can do the same to you-- and the group isn't the libruls.

For example, anyone willing to abrogate the rights of somebody struggling to speak English isn't a liberal, he's just a privileged asshole, especially if he can't speak the other guy's language.

13. And just what is his place?
People who claim to be liberals who support unlawful "immigration" are like parents who cannot tell their children "no." It may feel good to be compassionate, but it is horrible, horrible national policy.
