The Grapes of Wrath... the movie should I watch it?
Edited on Tue May-02-06 10:22 AM by DanCa
It'll be comming on fox movie channel in a few. I never seen it but I loved the book. Is themovie worth watching? Or should I go back to watching the X-File marathon on sci-fi channel.
Note that this is the 1940 version of the movie starring Henry Fonda.

It's a classic. We all may be living that way soon.

4. I cannot watch it, or read the book again. It hurts me, physically.
I knew GWB was the most worthless piece of shit ever to draw breath after one of his (Yale?) professors recalled that he ridiculed the characters in the book when assigned to read it .
Seriously heartwrenching...

Jane Darwell is perfect as dust bowl mother.

6. Mandatory viewing IMO...

It is an amazing documentation of an important time in our country's history. Tom Joad is a iconic character that is a true inspiration for people fighting for social justice -- I get chills just thinking about the famous "I'll be there" speech.

My family on my Mom's side were Okies -- lived on the plains in partially underground sod houses. I have pictures of them standing with old jalopies that look right out of "The Grapes of Wrath".

Watch it, you will not be disappointed.

7. I am watching it now.
Usually books that are translated into movies loose something but as of now it looks pretty darn good.

8. Since you've read the book
Yes, watch the movie. It loses a little in the translation, but they do a remarkable job.

13. It's an exception to the rule, for sure
Excellent performances by Henry Fonda (Tom Joad), John Carradine (Preacher Casy), and especially Jane Darwell as Ma Joad. They did cut out a lot of the more controversial material in the novel (i.e., anything to do with Ess Ee Ex), but that cast, directed by John Ford--well, you just can't go wrong! :toast:

Add to that, the film came out when the events it portrayed were still very much in the present. The New Deal was well under way and the great Okie migration was largely complete, but the Great Depression still had its grip on the country and the effects of the migration were being felt everywhere.

10. I liked the book better but the movie is also good.
My father lived that movie, he always has to have a last 6 months worth of food in the house. He lives very cheap.

This my be our future, look and learn.

Good acting in it, too, as I recall.
