2. I wasn't either until I became a Chaplin fan and found "Modern Times"
and try to watch the silents whenever they turn up now.

I would also recommend The Little Tramp.

Poor Charlie got blackballed for being a Communist and had to live out his days away from Hollywood.

Note Buster's hair suggesting the picture was taken during his filming of 'The General'. Keaton-B_21a

21. Norma Has Always Been One Of My Favorites...
... I think she retired much too early in her career. But if I recall correctly, she admitted later on that she didn't want to grow old on film. She wanted to remain "ageless" and eternally youthful in the eyes of her fans.

One of the things I enjoy most about her work is that even after "talkies" were well established, her acting style still had remnants and hints of an earlier era. In order to compensate for the limitations of not being able to speak, silent movie stars used exaggerated movements, gestures and wide-eyed facial expressions in order to convey the story, or an emotion.

Even though those things weren't needed so much in talking motion pictures... it was easy to see that her background and training was rooted in the silent era.

Being married to (or the widow of) Irving Thalberg also had its perks too... who else but Norma (at 34 years old) could be chosen to play a 16 year old Juliet. Who else but Norma could get away with it? She had a LOT of clout apparently.

On the other hand... The scenes of her playing a young Marie Antoinette (two years later when she's 36) really do push the limits of my ability to suspend disbelief.

But still... she's definitely one of my favorites and I'll always ADORE her work.

38. I can't remember what it was called
I saw it a couple of years ago at Cinecon in LA. I don't know if TCM has ever run it or not. They did a good job recreating her career, her last days, etc. And they showed surviving snippets from her films (or what's left of them).

I am a huge silent film fan, so it's great to see any interest in them. :D
