Diet soft drinks as mixers, especially with bourbon, which is somewhat sweeet anyway, are kind of disgusting, in my opinion (but to each his own). And RC isn't as sweet as Coca-Cola or Pepsi, so a bit more of the borbon's inherent sweetness comes through.

Splenda instead of saccharine seems to make a difference.
