Prince Henrik (of Denmark): " I like my dogs grilled or sautéed"
Edited on Wed May-03-06 09:52 AM by Kellanved
Prince Henrik, the prince consort of Denmark, has shocked animal lovers by declaring that dog meat - fried or grilled - is one of his favourite dishes.

The 72-year-old prince, a Frenchman by birth, said his penchant for dog meat had developed from the time he spent growing up and studying in Vietnam.

But the disclosure, made in an interview with a Danish magazine, has shocked the nation, particularly as the prince is the honorary president of the Danish Dachshund Club.

He has several dachshunds and, despite publishing a cookery book called Ikke Altid Gaselever (Not Always Goose Liver), has even published eulogies to them.

It gets even better:

"In another interview, he reportedly said he would like to be reborn as a dachshund."

1. Royalty is so delightful.
"a Frenchman by birth" - as if they even needed to mention that.

6. Henrick was a French citizen who grew up in Vietnam during that time
when the French occupied Vietnam. This was many years ago and long before he married the Crown Princess of Denmark. He even speaks Vietnamese.

I don not condone eating dog just like eating horse disgusts me. However, in the Vietnmaese culture it is apparently acceptable.

2. "Dog -- is that a pet allergy or food allergy she's talking about"
Edited on Wed May-03-06 10:20 AM by Patiod
True quote from a Vietnamese client during allergy research I was doing.

His colleagues all piled on him, until I asked the Swede if she had ever eaten horse ("Oh, not since I was a kid" "But you ate horse, right?"). Then I asked the Vietnamese guy what he thought of cheese. His colleagues were SHOCKED to find that the idea of eating spoiled clotted milk didn't appeal, and that he thought it "smells like feet".

As to this story, who can hate someone who wants to come back as a dachshund?

4. The article is misleading. Henrick said he tried dog (he lived in Vietnam)
Edited on Wed May-03-06 11:09 AM by CottonBear
He did not say he eats dog now or that he recommends it to others.

He grew up in Vietnam (he is French by birth - his name used to be Henri before he married the Queen of Demmark) and eating dog is apparently part of that culture. The Dutch and Belgians eat horsemeat (which I find disgusting but they don't.)

Phrases like "culinary favorites", "loves to eat dog" and "he urges Danes to try dog" are not mentioned at all in the original interview.

If you read the actual Danish interview, you can see that this thing is not quite correctly reported in the Daily Telegraph.
Reporter: "Have you ever tasted dog meat?"

Henrik: "I have, actually. It tastes a bit like rabitt. Or perhaps more like dry goat meat. Or like... No wait, veal, it tastes more like veal, dry veal!"

Henrik: "I am not troubled by eating dog meat. The dogs that one eats, are usually bred for it, just like one breed chicken in Denmark (...)"

5. Well let him be reborn as a wiener dog
and one of his descendants eat him. What a weird guy. I can't imagine eating dog. The very thought repulses me.

7. He ate it when he was living in Vietnma as a young person many years ago.
He speaks Vietnamese. He was one of the French colonials who lived in Vietnam.

He said he tried it. He has not eaten it since then and he does not eat dog now.

9. I can't imagine trying it either. Ditto, horse meat, liver (any kind),
Edited on Wed May-03-06 11:26 AM by CottonBear
organs, tongue, veal, goose liver pate, etc.

The only behavior one can change is one's own when it comes to culinary habits.

The Thai eat lots of bugs and insects. Yuck. :( But, they like 'em. :(

I was vegetarian for about 5 years at one point. This whole conversation makes me consider returning to be a vegetarian again.

edit: He and his wife, Queen Margarethe of Denmark, have Dachsunds and love them very much:
