7. It's from a book full of jokes to use in speeches.

I think it was written in the mid-eighties. One day, two of my friends and I were goofing around in Border's and started reading from it. We found them largely unfunny, from a different era of comedy even older than when the book was written, but still understandable. This one seemed surreal to us.

Your explanation is the one one of my friends proposed as well, and still the only one anyone we know can think of.
