Poll question: If you were given the opportunity to live in Hawaii for 3 years...
would you?

There might be a position on O'ahu just outside of Pearl Harbor. The Army will be moving us down there for a three-year tour, but having never lived on an island, I don't know if we'd experience cabin fever (or island fever ) after the first year. We're very outdoorsy and big into experiencing different cultures.

On one hand, I would absolutely love to check the place out. On the other hand, I can see the risk of it becoming very boring.

What do you all think?

1. I don't see how it would be much different than anywhere else

Sure, maybe fewer places to drive to, but if you have enough time where you are now to drive further out than would be possible there, you'd probably have enough time to hop a boat/plane and go somewhere, no?

3. Is golf available ?
Would you have to join a private club to play on a decent course?

4. As long as a three year tour
Doesn't end up like a three hour tour has a tendency to.

5. Other
15 years ago, I lived in CT and the company I worked for back then was going downhill fast. They did some layoffs and a close fried got axed. He looked for another job for a few months and then just decided he had had enough. He sold everything he owned except for a few items of clothing and a few minor possesions, bought a one way ticket to Hawaii and never looked back. He is still there today and loves it.

6. I spent most of one summer on O'ahu (Honolulu), and
I had a fantastic time. I took a class at the Univ of Hawai'i at Manoa. The nice thing is that you have such incredibly gorgeous surroundings and can travel easily from one island to the other by plane. The down side is that everything is soooo much more expensive there because it all has to be shipped in, except local produce and farm products (like milk).

My great uncle fell in love with Hawai'i while he was stationed there during WWII, and he went back there to live. He made regular trips back to the mainland (at least once a year) so that he and his wife would not feel isolated or cooped up on an island. I never felt cooped up when I was there, simply because there is a lot to do and keep you occupied. If you dwell on the fact that you're in the middle of the Pacific, you might go crazy---but don't think about it! :)

BTW, I think it's funny that Hawai'i has interstates. I mean, I know the Federal highway system is available to all states, but do you really think they could build a bridge to California? What about "intrastate" instead???

7. Have you been to O'ahu?
I don't think you should worry about "island fever".

Honolulu is a major city with all the urban stuff you could want. Lots of outdoorsy opportunities close at hand as well.

Plus, you could probably visit the other islands as well.
Native Hawai'ians lived there for centuries without going nuts, so I think you'll be fine.
