Did you know that if an ATM machine breaks with your card
inside that you'll never see your card again?

Happened to DH this morning at a local bank where we use the ATM. He puts his card in and the machine goes to "out of order" on the screen. He went inside the bank and a teller was going to retrieve it for him but apparently they can't do that unless the card is from their own bank. He confirmed this with our bank when he placed a stop/cancel on the card and gave information for the new one to be issued.

I never thought about this happening before. I could fully understand it if it had taken place at a stand-alone ATM..but when the ATM is placed at a bank and that bank services the machines I really thought you'd get your card back if their stupid machine broke.

Anyway..just a FYI.

1. I had that happen to me a few months ago.
Pain in a**, but you have to call your bank and ask for a replacement. In my case, the ATM did not eat the card, but I forgot to retrieve that card after finishing the transaction. Someone was at least nice enough to return to someone inside the bank.

2. Took over 1/2 hr on the phone
with all the automated stuff and then getting to a real person to give all the information to stop/cancel and do the re-issue.

Glad your card was turned in. Our concern was if the card would suddenly pop out with another customer attempting to use the machine not realizing it's out of order. The bank said they have no idea when their ATM is down unless someone tells them or they go service it in the afternoon.

4. And if you leave it in the slot after it gives it back once your
transaction is complete, before too long it'll take it back because it thinks you've left.
