Another London travel question from Gramps, if you don't mind.
Edited on Thu May-04-06 09:08 PM by Radio_Lady
What's your best advice on getting ourselves and 4 fairly large pieces of luggage from the train station at King's Cross to Trafalgar Square?

We'll be getting in by train from Edinburgh, Scotland, at around 4PM on a Friday, which could mean that it will be very busy.

I came across this on the bus station link: Bus # 91 King's Cross Station Trafalgar Square

(But what about luggage?)

Thanks in advance,

The continuing World Travels of Radio_Lady and Gramps, her spouse

1. Can anyone provide any further information on this?
It just went down in a heap with all the other topics!

Thanks a bunch, especially for the PMs that I've been sent.

4. Get a black taxi
4pm on a Friday will be busy. Getting that much luggage on a bus will be a nightmare.

PS be sure to visit Dennis Sever's house www.dennissevershouse.co.uk and Borough Market.

:)

2. Taxi. It's worth the splurge with all that luggage.
The stairs alone will kill ya.

5. Second that motion.
Kings Cross is having some building work done to the Tube station which makes everything more difficult and complex. There isn't a direct journey from Kings Cross to Charing Cross (the station which serves Trafalgar Square). Add in 4 o'clock on a Friday...

Buses at that time of day, are terrible as well - again the Transport for London web-site says that you'd have to take two buses as well.

3. Your hotel should have a shuttle. Failing that, take the taxi
Buses, heavy luggage and rush hour most definitely do not mix.

Great picture by the way!

6. We'll try to query the hotel about a shuttle.
Now that my husband has a new digital camera, you can be sure we'll get some updated photos. That one's from Florida 2002!

How time flies when you're having fun!

Thanks for your post.

8. London Taxis are very roomy
and most of the drivers were polite and will help you (tip them well-they work hard). I always pack light. It is just not worth it. I once had a 6 week stay in Europe and lived out of my carry on. Never travel with something you would hate to lose. They are civilized so you can find what you need anywhere.
Have fun. Sounds great.

9. Another vote for cabbing it
I often cab it from Victoria to my hotel. I once took the bus, but it was an early morning flight & I only had a small bag. :)

:hi: Radio Lady! Are you going to Edinburgh? It's great!

11. I was there last year!
My cousin & I stayed at the Castle Rock Hostel & took a bicycle tour of Edinburgh our first day. We walked up & down the Royal Mile & IIRC, there is a thrift shop right on the Mile which supports animal hospitals. :) I don't know where it is in relation to the Castle or Holyrood, but I think it's closer to the Holyrood end. Holyrood, btw, was beautiful, especially the gardens. We liked the exterior of the Castle, but we didn't go inside since we were told by a local it was :boring:. We also didn't have too much time to waste, as we were only there 2 days.

We did the Underground Edinburgh tour, which was cool, & the MacKinzie Poltergeist tour, which we thought was more of a mind game than anything spooky. Of course, there's the statue of Greyfriars Bobby to take pics at. If you're a Harry Potter fan (or know a few), you have to stop at the Elephant Cafe, which is just off of the Royal Mile (we found it when we were looking for the Greyfriars Bobby statue). We went back later & had dinner in the back room, which has huge glass windows with a view of the Castle. Very cool!

Also, you have to stop at the Starbucks on Princes Street. Awesome view of the Castle from the other side. It's in the guidebooks, so it's an "official" place to sight-see. ;) Well, that was our excuse anyway.
