DU Folding@Home - Put your PC to work to fight disease!
This is the next DU Folding@Home Thread in support of citizen action in support of finding the cure for a wide range of diseases. Please join us as we contribute the power of our computers in the advancement of science and the betterment of all. You can get info from the Folding@Home Homepage, then download the client from the Download Page for Folding@Home.
http://folding.stanford.edu /

To make things easier, you may want to run the client as a service, or on the Mac you can put the client into the login items page. You can learn a lot by referencing the last thread: Thread #10 (see below). You will see that the linked DU page will reference older threads.

One other request: please join the DU Folding@Home team:
DU Folding@Home team #48157

Thank you, and please consider joining us.

The volunteers on the DU Folding@Home team (#48157)

12. Let's get back above 300 CPU's We need to help new users
learn how to make the client launch at login. I can see people dropping out because they forget to launch the client.

5. More on how F@H works
Folding@home does not rely on powerful supercomputers for its data processing; instead, the primary contributors to the Folding@home project are many thousands of personal computer users who have installed a small client program. The client runs in the background, and makes use of the CPU when it is not busy. In most modern personal computers, the CPU is rarely used to its full capacity at all times; the Folding@home client takes advantage of this unused processing power.

The Folding@home client periodically connects to a server to retrieve "work units," which are packets of data upon which to perform calculations. Each completed work unit is then sent back to the server.

Contributors to Folding@home may have user names used to keep track of their contributions. Each user may be running the client on one or more CPUs; for example, a home user with two computers could run the client on both of them. Users may also contribute under one or more team names; many different users may join together to form a team. Contributors are assigned a score indicating the number and difficulty of completed work units. Rankings and other statistics are posted to the Folding@home website.

9. This week
I've been overseas for a few months, got back home this week.

When I started the team, I never imagined that we would make the Top 1000, much less the Top 300.

Great job, DU! Keep folding!

11. Hope you had an enjoyable journey.
At one time we had over 300 folders, but some have not kept up with it. I say most who have stayed on have it running as a service or a login item.

13. Got 2 Work units done
I'm about 85% on third computer. I was going to hook up my video processing computer until I realized I didn't have any empty slots for the wireless card. Guess I'll have to get a USB wireless adapter. That still leaves me my laptop and one more comp as a spare.

29. Man how do they do it?
Well, I got my spare PC and the main PC on the go now (the main machine tends to stay on overnight anyway so no big sweat to keep two on). So that's a Celeron 1200 and an Intel P3 2.4 Mhz to add to the workpool (sorry not latest processors but what the heck).

If only I could get my employers in on it (man that would be a LOT of desktop computers - and signed up for the DU team? There's about 500 computers on the 4th floor of my place of work alone!).

But still... it's two more than what was there yesterday.

Mark.

26. I finished a WU and started my 2nd, but the stats don't show it.
Is there some latency in the system?

I sent the finsihed WU, and the 2nd downloaded, then I got a msg that F@H had to shutdown. I restarted OK, and the 2nd WU is working - but the error msg wasn't on the F@H FAQ page - just wondering.
