I saw a "Jesus Was A Liberal" bumper sticker this morning...
that's one of my favorites, and it's always great to see one in my red area. The car had several other Jesus bumper stickers too, but I couldn't slow down to see what they said. I assume they also had a liberal bent.

Does anyone know other liberal religious-themed bumper stickers?

Edited on Fri May-05-06 12:08 PM by DaveTheWave
....someone can tell me that Jesus, who historically was known to exist, son of God???, anyway...prove to me that Jesus believed in a woman's right to choose or a terminally ill person can choose a planned and dignified death versus suffering and losing limbs for six months or longer and maybe I'll go along with the quote.

7. Good grief. "The right to choose" for women OR the terminally ill
were not social issues of the Biblical day.

Jesus hung with the dregs of society - tax collectors, lepers, prostitutes. He ministered to the sick, the poor, and the forgotten. He preached love, peace, and forgiveness. His greatest commandment to us was to love one another.

8. "were not social issues of the Biblical day"....exactly and....
...neither was liberalism or conservatism, democrats or republicans, etc. so what's the point?

I'd personally agree that "Jesus was a good guy" and leave it at that. :)

9. The point is that conservatives seem to have taken "ownership"
of Jesus. The "Jesus was a liberal" statement is an answer to that.

...they use it as an excuse and/or advantage to justify taking civil rights away from others with "the bible says" or "in God's name", etc.

Now that I think about it, Jesus and his (daddy???) didn't like gays very much so maybe he wasn't as liberal or such a nice guy as some think he was and as I prematurely stated above.

11. Jesus didn't say anything about gays.
And others' words on the subject (Paul, for example) are open to interpretation.

It is not my interpretation that Jesus "didn't like gays very much". Those on the right who refer to homosexuality as "an abomination" are usually referring to Leviticus, pretty much the rest of which they conveniently ignore.

Many believe Paul was referring to male prostitution and not homosexuality at all - it comes down to the many translations of the Bible and the intent and interpretation of those who did the translating. The important thing to remember is that the Bible was the work of man.

Another thing I agree with and it seems you definitely have a better knowledge of it than me. My opinion of it is that it's a book of fairy tales that was written to explain things that couldn't be explained by the lack of science and technology back then and one way to make people who lacked the education and common sense that we have today be obedient and support the church financially. One the most common and historically damaging traits of the bible that was as rampant back then as it is now is/was creating enemies among mankind.

But hey, sorry to get this thread of topic, have a great afternoon and I think the stickers are okay.

13. Jeez, how condescending
"it's a book of fairy tales that was written to explain things that couldn't be explained by the lack of science and technology back then"

I was under the impression it was more a collection of narrations intended to teach the reader lessons for their personal advancement. You know, to improve their personal morality so as to bring them closer to godliness?

It's certainly true that the lessons are tailored to the condition of the people at the time. So, the teachings of the Old Testament are very stark: do not kill, do not steal, do not commit adultery, etc., whereas those of the New Testament are more subtle and nuanced: love thy neighbour as thy own brother, etc.

I guess with their lack of knowledge of science in those days, they must have been so stupefyingly bewildered that it's a wonder they ever got out of bed, right?

...it's my opinion and mine only which I think I'm entitled to whether I'm right or wrong and which neither I claim to be.

Edit-example: Back then when there was a drought farmers thought they were being punished and sacrificed animals thinking it would make it rain, now they know you need irrigation systems.

29. We're not so much better
We've got our own beliefs which we stick to despite the evidence. Some of us believe in free market economics which will save us all; some others believe in communism. Some of us see these ideologies as folly, but then may have their own beliefs which are all quite irrational in their own way. In fact, when we examine things closely, everyone believes in something.

My point to you is that it would be good if we could be a little more humble and lose some of the feeling of superiority. We don't know so much; most things that modern science has told us over the years has turned out to be wrong, and much of what scientists say today will probably also be proved wrong in the future. I guess I probably know more about this than you, and many great scientists have recognised that what they know is far outweighed by what they do not.

I was going to leave it but I saw that you had added an edit later on.

FWIW, I studied physics to batchelor's level at university, and I am not a Christian.

35. Improve personal morality based on the Bible?
The Bible is full of incest, stonings, smitings, murders, and contraditions. As a road map to morality, I'd say it's one of the most piss-poor choices one could make.

17. "...neither was liberalism or conservatism..."
False, that is a constant theme throughout the OT and was present in 1st cent. Palestine. The power struggle was between the liberal Pharacees and the reactionary Sadducees. The Pharasees wanted a more liberalized society closely cooperating with Rome and reaping the economic benefits thereof. The Sadducees did want anything to do with the pagan outsiders and presumably would rather be princes of East Nowhere than middle management in the Roman Empire. The point of the NT is that they were both wrong for focusing on worldly government rather than direct relations among people and between people and God.

18. False?
You are making an assumption or statement that the bible is true without any undeniable proof that it is in fact "true" to qualify it. Just because it was written in the bible and just because you believe in it does not prove or make it true.

24. I simply mean that conservatism vs. liberalism was around then.
My recollection (and it has been awhile) is that the NT only alludes to the debate I indicated. The OT, on the other hand, seems to be an ongoing dialogue partly on that subject. Exodus and Leviticus seem to lean heavily toward a conservative view while Job seems like a rebuttal to Leviticus. Deuterononomy was "discovered" just in time to settle a debate between a conservative versus liberalized reading of Mosaic Law.

I don't think any of those books are true in a factual sense. They are true in that they represent the mythology and world view of the time.

I read these posts too fast sometimes and your well informed comments seemed that you were a believer and supporter of the bible. I'm sure a lot of folks reading this are getting the wrong ideas and assumptions about me too but that's okay. If they can't have a conversation or debate on things like this without getting pissy then why even bother bringing up the subject.

16. A couple points.
First, not all liberals agree with your two examples. Second, in the NT Jesus says to give to all who beg, to sell possessions and give away the money and to forgive ones enemies. He preached against artificial barriers and labels for people attacking the theocracy as hypocritical and discredited the idea of moral superiority based on ethnicity or religion.

Second, outside of the NT, there is no evidence that Jesus even existed. I am aware that there is circumstantial evidence to suggest that the Jesus of the NT was actually composite character consisting of the personalities of several people and mythical persons. (I don't know the details of this assertion, only that it exists.)

It is also laughable to me that even though I live a good life and "give to all who beg, to sell possessions and give away the money and to forgive ones enemies" that I'd still be condemned to hell for not believing in the almighty.
My goodness...my parents used to scare me with the "boogey man" when I was a little kid. I'm much too old and too informed to be scared of myths and legends anymore and to be told to obey what they say or else.
