Boy's eating habits lead to international protest
:wtf:

Boy's eating habits lead to international protest

CBC News

The way seven-year-old Montreal student Luc Cagadoc eats his lunch has led to an international protest.
Young Montreal student Luc Cagadoc says he eats as Filipinos traditionally do. (CBC)

Luc used to eat his lunch at his school with a fork and spoon, until one day his teacher told him it was wrong.

According to Luc, the way she said it wasn't nice. "She said, I'm disgusting, I'm a pig, I'm a clown by the way I'm eating," said the young Montrealer.

Luc says he was punished and moved to another table away from his friends for eating the way Filipinos have traditionally eaten.

It's too early to figure this one out.

What's wrong with using a fork and spoon, just as Luc had? He wasn't eating with his fingers? And so what if he was? Different, yes, but not in of itself actions of a pig or clown! (Maybe I misread the article, but somebody thinks it's wrong (to the level of immorality) to use a fork and spoon? How are they being used?? And why is it an issue at all??)

But emotionally traumatized? Why can't I have an article made from the hell I had to go through? It's much more considerable than eating with a fork and spoon. :eyes::eyes::eyes::eyes: You want emotional trauma, what I survived would kill that kid, if only one little fork'n'spoon incident caused that much trauama, which I doubt.

Worst of all, the article doesn't educate: Just how do Filipinos traditionally eat?! It's just empty sensationalism, of the water cooler sort.

Edit: Added clarification.

I read the article hoping to find out what the differences were in the way North Americans/Canadians eat and the way Filipino's eat. There's nothing educational in the article. I can't imagine why this would spark an international protest!
Yes, the parents should be angry, take it up with the school board etc. I'm thinking traumatized is too strong a word. (unless he was humiliated in front of his friends?)

"empty sensationalism" you're right :)

13. He pushed the food onto a spoon with a fork!!! SERIESLY!
Edited on Sat May-06-06 10:16 AM by philosophie_en_rose
OMG!!!! How rude!!

:eyes:

Maybe I'm just a Filipina pig, but I don't see how it either matters that he uses his fork and spoon that way or how calling him a pig is supposed to teach him anything about allegedly superior Canadian manners.

:grr:

And I the English eat with two utensils at once as well. Of course, that Quebecois snob would probably look down on the Queen of England herself.

17. We all went through shit in school
Does that mean that this kid can't be really hurt and upset by a person in a position of authority calling him names and disparaging a cultural habit? Jesus. Every time there's something about a problem in schools, someone comes out with "Oh god, I had it worse, I went through this and that" as if that somehow makes whats happening to this kid ok. It doesn't. The kid is SEVEN. I'd probably have been pretty fucking upset if at SEVEN I was called a pig and a clown and pulled away from my friends for eating lunch by a teacher.

5. Maybe he eats his salad first...
The acculturated Europeans have always criticized Americans for
such trivialities in our eating habits.

Possibly he switches hands with the utensils.

10. Here, complete with picture
http://www.westislandchronicle.com/pages/article.php?noArticle=6063
Luc Cagadoc’s table behaviour is traditionally Filipino; he fills his spoon by pushing the food on his plate with a fork, his mother, Maria Theresa Gallardo, says.

Boy, the lady would have gone apeshit if he'd eaten British style. (Mash everything together, then slip it onto your fork with your knife.)

11. Filipinos eat with their hands; so do most people.
Edited on Sat May-06-06 09:54 AM by philosophie_en_rose
If they're nitpicking over how he pushing food onto his spoon with a fork, they're really ridiculous. "Pig"??? Oh please.

Filipino Moms are worse (in my personal experience) are very concerned about manners. His mom wouldn't let him grow up to be rude.

That school is full of racist bullshit - based on something so silly, I can't even believe.

Look at the picture, does that boy look like a pig?

And it's not like's disturbing anyone. He's not eating balut or anything. The teacher is just being an ass.

How do people like this ever get into elementary education?! Makes you shudder at the thought of sending your kids off to school, wondering when some self-righteous motherfucker is going to call them a pig or a clown. :wtf:
