1. This is pretty hard, haha...
Edited on Sat May-06-06 01:09 PM by primate1
Idiot Pilot - Electronic/post-hardcoreish type stuff, I guess. Recommended track: Sparkplug

M83 - More electronic-type stuff. Bit of a shoegazer type of thing going on. Recommended track: * (Yes, the songs title is an asterisk, haha.)

Refused - I assume you already know them, but they're worth mentioning anyway. Recommended track(s): Refused Are Fucking Dead; Poetry Written in Gasoline

Arctic Monkeys - British garage punk. Lots of critical buzz, apparently (I never follow that stuff) but they're pretty awesome. Recommended track: When The Lights Go Down

I can't think of a fifth right now.

5. I've been listening to Slapstick and the Broadways today
Edited on Sat May-06-06 02:05 PM by Derailer
definitely them, especially the Broadways where you get some extremely relevant socio-political commentary

Other than that I dunno...if you like hardcore the two best releases of this decade are probably Comeback Kids "Turn It Around" and Modern Life Is War's "Witness"

Both of those are awesome to say the least

Oh, and Refused from the above list is obvious I think :D

EDIT to add track recommendations since I see others are doing that and add a fifth band:

Slapstick: "Cheat to Win"
Broadways: "Red Line" (although not necessarily my pick)
Comeback Kid: "All In A Year"
A Whilhelm Scream: "William Blake Overdrive"
Modern Life Is War: "Clarity"

36. Mojo Nixon?!
Great Googly Moogly! Didn't know he was still around. Saw him at a local venue's outdoor stage a few years back, when he was still with Skid Roper, and he was being, well, Mojo Nixon. The place across the plaza was playing (shudder) disco and Mojo finally screamed , "Turn off that fuckin' disco". And guess what? They did. He also commented on the police that were at the show proclaiming that he was going to be arrested for profanity. He wasn't, but it made for an entertaining show. I sure wish he'd make more records and tour again. Rebel Rock at it's craziest.

He DJed a while in San Diego; now he's on Sirius DJing and talking politics.

Retiring:

At his site, you learn that he's unretiring to support Kinky Friedman's Texas gubernatorial candidacy (I swear I'm not making this up):

Edit: On closer reading, he briefly unretired.

16. Something different for you - a few great bands of different genres:
Africando: They're an African Salsa group. It's not your typical salsa, though, it's more orchestral. They also sing in about 12 different languages. Here's a sample of "Yaye Boy":
http://dw.com.com/redir?ltype=&siteid=31&edid=3&asId=&astId=&ctype=&cval=&ptid=5024&onid=49&useract=31&destURL=http%3A%2F%2Fsg1.allmusic.com%2Fcg%2Fsmp.dll%3Flink%3Dgvdctek2sg07a5pkbux5im4%26z%3DMP3%26r%3D20.asx

Burning Spear: Not really a group, as Burning Spear represents one guy, but he has a great band behind him. His Marcus Garvey album was one of the best reggae albums ever, and lot of people have never heard of it: http://www.mp3.com/albums/80542/summary.html

La Sonora Carruseles: A Columbian salsa group. Their music is extremely danceable and accessible to the untrained salsa ear. Here's a sample of Mosaico Cumbias:
http://sg1.allmusic.com/cg/smp.dll?link=krp7tyhum2oux4l2cvi4azf&z=MP3&r=20.asx
and La Comay:
http://sg1.allmusic.com/cg/smp.dll?link=p9sehs5ltobvs478m5kffj5&z=MP3&r=20.asx

The Roots: They are a rap group who uses live instruments. Plus it's not that crappy bling-bling rap you hear on the radio - the lyrics are positive, brilliant, and innovative. All of their albums are good. Here's a sample of Next Movement:
http://sg1.allmusic.com/cg/smp.dll?link=rdg5uc5zmrg2cq0vzop1mp1&z=MP3&r=20.asx

The Manhattans: You probably know a lot of their songs and don't even know it. They're an old soul group that a lot of people don't remember, but I'm sure you might recognize
Shining Star
http://www.amazon.com/gp/music/wma-pop-up/B000002AAJ001013/ref=mu_sam_wma_001_013/002-6573128-0656852
or Kiss and Say Goodbye:
http://www.amazon.com/gp/music/wma-pop-up/B000002AAJ001001/ref=mu_sam_wma_001_001/002-6573128-0656852

La Banda Gorda: A merengue/mambo group which has the most intricate and complex horn arrangements that I've ever heard. Great in not only a musical appreciation sense, but it's fun to listen and dance to, as well. I struggled to find a good sample of one of their horn arrangements, as the samples feature the vocal arrangements, which are decent, but it's the horns that are really incredible. Here's one sample of Carino Con Ella:
http://sg1.allmusic.com/cg/smp.dll?link=mfkryh6jsri8see5gc0kwb4&z=MP3&r=20.asx
Traigo Fuego:
http://sg1.allmusic.com/cg/smp.dll?link=krp7evyu9qo6e4w2c7n4azf&z=MP3&r=20.asx
and Dehalo Ahi:
http://sg1.allmusic.com/cg/smp.dll?link=j09s5gq7w24056i5ib676dh&z=MP3&r=20.asx

I highly recommend their albums Puro Mambo and Por El Mismo Camino

Well....that's six bands. I was about to do about three more, but that's enough for now.

Edited on Sat May-06-06 02:32 PM by RandomKoolzip
1. Visqueen: Amazing, fleet-minded power-pop led by songwriter Rachel Flotard. Like the Descendents with Loretta Lynn on vox.

2. Fieldwork: Small, organic band with traditional jazz/rock instrumentation fuses elements of free jazz, dub, electronica and straight bop with a bizarre "collage" sensibility; their "dub" song "Infogee Dub" sounds like enormous turntables skipping, breaking down, and being paused by the hand of God somewhere near the Crab Nebula.

3. Odd Nosdam: Anticon-associated hip hop group makes instumental tracks that sound like a cough syrup high feels.

4. Secret Affair: okay, a strange recommendation. One of the best bands of the Mod Revival (79-81), Secret Affair possessed a superior singer in Ian Page, a decent rhythm section, and better-than-average songwriting. The "Mod Till Death!" rhetoric dates the material badly, but a song as good as "I'm Not Free (But I'm Cheap)" transcends such concerns. To my knowledge, unavailable on CD, but their two albums and various singles are worth checking out if you dig this kinda stuff.

5. Mylab: Free jazzers make music using electronic manipulation of pre-WWII blues and folk records. Way beyond anything Moby could even conceive of.

Crash Tokio. Specifically the song Time and Time. Listen and I think you'll get it.

Mystery Jets. Again with another particular song, You Can't Fool Me Dennis.

Jeniferever. HOLY. CRAP. GOOD. Swedish 'post-rock noise pop'. Seriously, like fifteen Os

29. OK, you're probably heard of all of these before, but here goes...
1. Strung Out. Sure, they're probably all high on meth, but they helped me get through the past week by keeping me angry when I needed to get emotion out. Recommended track - Blueprint of the Fall.

2. Strike Anywhere. Melodic political hardcore from Richmond, Virginia with a lead singer with a great voice and shitty hair. Recommended track(s) - Chalkline, Infrared.

3. The Lawrence Arms. Chicago hometown boys who sound British even though they're not. Recommended track - The Devil's Takin' Names.

4. Wait for it, because this is big for me...Sage Francis...yes, that's right...I found some rap I actually like. Admittedly, I like him because he did a guest vocal part on a Bad Religion song, but, yeah...rap...me...hmm...whoda guessed? Anyway, recommended track - Slow Down Gandhi.

Edited on Sat May-06-06 06:57 PM by enigmatic
15-60-75:

Clevo legends; they've been around for 35 years and are still the greatest unsigned band of al-time. Imagine free jazz, gut-bucket blues, straight-ahead rock, all harnessed and held together by guitarist/vocalist/songwriter/madman Bob Kidney. If you chack out one band from this list, make it these guys...

http://www.numbersband.com/

Richmond Fontaine:

The best band in North America, period. Raymond Carver short-stories set to alternately screaming punk and weepy, high-lonesome rural roots music.
My favorite band, and has been for years:

http://www.richmondfontaine.com/

The J&H Productions Guy:

The Rap To End All Raps; listen to him and be enveloped by The Man's style, "pertaining to", of course:

http://www.timharrod.com/jhhome.html

Band Of Horses:

Yeah, they don't do anything new or exciting, but their take on Sadcore/Neil Young Freakouts is much better than most, and "The Great Salt Lake" and "The Funeral" are instant classics:

The Silos:

The Velvet Underground as an art-country band, and one of my favorite bands of all-time. Walter Salas-Humara is a God:

49. I'll do the five I brought with me to work today
1. Exploding Hearts - Guitar Romantic

Sadly all but one member is now deceased. They only got to release one record, but man does it kick ass. They were punk revivalists, but they sounded VERY authentic. The first time I heard GR I swear I thought it was recorded in 1977.

2. The Fruit Bats - Mouthfuls

Slightly experimental folk-pop. Really lush harmonies and jangly pop sing along choruses. It's a great CD to listen to while hiking.

3. Hutch and Kathy - Hutch and Kathy

Extremely pretty boy/girl twee pop from the folks who would then form (much harder) Thermals. One of my favorite records of all time.

4. The Weakerthans - Reconstruction Site.

John Samson is one of my favorite songwriters. I really like the twangy alt-countryish vibe on many of the songs on RS.

5. Cars Can Be Blue - Cars Can Be Blue

More low-fi indie twee-pop with boy girl vocals. These guys have a kind of absurdest bent with regard to lyrics, singing songs about abortion, hardcore sex, dating superheroes, and retarded people. Tongue planted firmly in cheek, of course.

in Chicago once, but the gig got cancelled. I also had a gig cancelled to open up for Jim Goad, author of The Redneck Manifesto, but he beat his girlfriend up and got thrown in jail instead.

54. 5
Le Shok - Uptempo spazz-punk with fun song titles like "White Tie, You Die" and "Killed By Fuck"

Parts and Labor - Brooklyn noise-rock, but melodic (!) and with soaring, anthemic tunes. Their new LP, "Stay Afraid", is just awesome.

Gnarls Barkley - electronic music strongly referenced to '70s soul. Less abstract and noisy than the similarly-conceived TV on the Radio.

MIA - a female Sri Lankan rapper whose debut album is freakin' coooooooooool.

Section 25 - early Factory Records band (so basically you know what they sound like) who're actually reuniting, I recently learned.

58. Here's an eclectic group of six for ya...
1. The Band. Simply the most under rated rock band of all time. Two of the five have gone on to a better world, so you have to be satisfied with their formidable work from the 60's to the 80's. Try their greatest hits CD. Great stuff.

2. Cream. The first, and greatest of the "super groups". Eric Clapton, Jack Bruce and Ginger Baker. Unbelievable how a band of three could make such great music.

3. Original Allman Brothers Band. The late, great Duane Allman on slide guitar, vocals by Gregg Allman and Dicky Betts. Some sensational rock compositions. Live, they were without equal.

4. Early Fleetwood Mac. Forget Stevie Nicks and Lindsey Buckingham. I love Christine McVie as a singer and songwriter and the very early versions of this band did some really great blues stuff. Check out "Oh Well" from way back in the 60's or 70's.

5. Gillian Welch. A wonderful and very under rated bluegrass/folk singer songwriter.

6. Sade. Wonderful singer. She sings me to sleep on many a night via my DAP.

79. I have five GREAT unknowns here
Edited on Sun May-07-06 02:34 PM by bedpanartist
Wussy - www.wussymusic.com
Cincinnati's Chuck Cleaver (Ass Ponys) and co-writer Lisa Miller along with drummer Dawn Burman and multi-instrumentalist Mark Messerly have just released what I think is the record of the year in Funeral Dress. If you are familiar with Cleaver's work, you'll know that he is one of the great unsung American songwriters alive today.

Reviews for "Funeral Dress"
"They're an unlikely seeming pair. They fit perfectly. Four Stars " - Robert Christgau / Blender

"It's as if they've reduced all of white Ohio to an articulated drone, unlocked a silo or warehouse of hummable tunes, and worked out the harmonies." - Robert Christgau / Village Voice

"a woozy melodic rush" - RollingStone.com

#12 on Christgau's 2005 Pazz and Jop "Dean's List" - Village Voice
"Wussy is here to stay and Funeral Dress may be one of the finest albums of the year." - Amplifier

"a veritable sock in the gut...they hit you where it counts" - Harp

one of "the 97 best of 2005" - woxy.com

"Whatever it is. Whatever they're doing, it works." - No Depression

And, four more who I love too:

Reagan's Polyp (Little Rock, AK): http://www.trashfish.com
Frank Zappa meets Rob Zombie and Nietche on the way to the Circle K where they form a band using drums, bass and a moog.

Oxymoronatron (dayton, Ohio) - http://www.oxymoronatron.com
Wacky, wild robotic rock that is exactly that.

drexel (Dayton, Ohio) - Apocalyptic Appalachian Lounge Music.
http://www.myspace.com/drexelohio
"Dayton, Ohio's Drexel is truly one of a kind. Tom Waits is the most reasonable touchstone, but there's a severity to their whimsical flamboyance that makes Waits seem almost mundane in comparison. "Monolithic Beast" starts out as a soulful lounge ballad in deep space, but eventually transforms into something roughly akin to lo-fi show tune. The band is an acquired taste, but totally worth the effort."
from http://www.fluxblog.org

The Altered Statesman (Nashville, TN) - The Altered Statesman is the most soulful mormon in America. You can download his soulful stylings at:

87. Okay

1. Life of Agony-Keith Caputo's voice, is damn amazing to me. But, on the other hand, people complain about his voice. Much like how people complain about Zach Dela Roacha's, Chris Cornells voice. But, I love Caputo's voice, it just speaks to me. Lyrically, the songs are sound, and very powerful to me. Alan Roberts, the bassist, writes most of the songs. These band is borderline metal/alternative.

2. Finch-I haven't heard/seen to much of them on the main stream, so i recommen them. The sound/voice of the band to me, is distinctive...alternative...

3. Shadows Fall-One of the first bands I have heard in a long time, that implements the old standard, guitar solo! they are metal...:)

4. Alision Krauss and Union Station-I am by no means, a country music fan, but my wife got me hooked on these guys. The fiddle, picking, and down right voice of Alision, is amazing...

5. Metallica-My favorite band, of all time...they have a bit of everything, their early stuff to me is better, but lately they have been trying to reshape their image....
