2. Other: A post that demonstrates a DUer's thoughtful analysis. |
|
I'm not interested in Recommending regurgitations (except perhaps in LBN or E&OA) posted without the "value added" of the poster's observations.

I recommend a lot of types of posts, the main thread would be that it informs or offers solutions rather than just being finger pointing. My main interest is the drug war and prison reform, but media consolidation, election and open government reform or any number of other issues will get my attention too. Just have something more constructive to say than how bad the other side is, offer a better option or some new info, a plan of some sort. Topic doesn't matter as much as approach.

that need connecting or/and analyzing. The PICTURE is much larger than any of the peripheral issues that we all tend to slip into at the drop of a zipper.

5. A posting that makes some unique point |
|
Usually something I hadn't considered and that takes me to a new level on an issue. So, it doesn't have to be a rant but rather a carefully considered and well articulated statement or argument. And this could be an essay or article found online or the thoughts of the OP.
I couldn't find a choice for this in your poll.

Will Pitt is the best writer we've got out there. Clear, cogen, persuasive, passionate. He's got the heart, phrasing and long view of hisoty to make his stuff really worthwhile.

8. Anything That Exemplifies Our Values And Puts It Forth In A Rational And |

well laid out manner. I'll generally recommend a thread regardless of topic for those reasons. I recommend threads based on a simple criteria system: Would a newcomer/lurker be enticed by it and relate to it enough to want to explore this site further? That's what matters to me. One of our biggest missions is to get our message and the truth out, and to do that we need people to find us. When they do find us, I want them to quickly be able to see threads that exemplify what we are about and why we are the best way to go, above stupid threads like 'ambien is evil' or god knows what else. Threads that rise above the petty foolishness and contain content that would make me proud when I tell a new acquaintance to check out DU, are the ones that get my nod.

13. Posts that are about PEOPLE ACTUALLY GETTING OFF THEIR ASSES!! |

Like images of, or stories about, protesters. Or the work of politically motivated artists. Or a new website which tries to expose an injustice.

except it's not completely random on this end. It's more like research for me. I've written some stuff recently that I thought would go over well, but instead landed with an audible THUD. Even the crickets went silent. So I am trying to figure you people out.

It's hard to figure out what gets peoples attention sometimes, I've posted in threads that went nowhere then days later participated in a larger thread that talked about pretty much the same thing. Damned if I could tell the difference that made one fly and the other not.

18. It's easier to figure out what will get 50+ votes |
|
than it is to figure out what might get 5-10 votes. Other than the BIG STORY, the extremely popular stuff must have one or more of the following three elements:
1) Pictures
2) Must be posted by WilliamPitt or another of a small, select group of the popular kids in school
3) Someone must be dead, dying, or going to jail
The next level down, in the 20-or-so votes range, is the rant that exposes the enemy and simultaneously challenges the reader.
Anything else seems to be hit-or-miss.
No offense intended toward anyone by these observations.

19. Something that's the OPer's own idea or his own rant |
|
as opposed to voting for posts that are just pasting articles, although the right articles are obviously just as important and certainly deserve to get the number of votes they do.
OTOH, there is a certain candidate who all you gotta do is mention his name in the OP and it gets umpteen votes for greatest page. "So and so" sneezed last night.......23 votes!!
