Baby #2..Looking for Girl names that can be shortened to Boy names...
We are expecting a daughter in mid august and are trying to come up with a name.

We like the idea of a girl's name that can be shortened to make a boy's name like:

Samantha:Sam
Nicole: Nic
Alexis: Alex

Collective brain power request...help us think of more like this.

Thanks!

9. You didn't like being given a man's name?
What's up with that?

I suppose they thought they were being clever, either that or they could only come up with one name.

10. It was a female name
Shortened to a mans name. And I HATED it. Especially when kids at school shortened it even FURTHER. ugh. If I ever found out my parents did it on purpose, there would have been words exchanged. Strong words.

32. I went to college with a girl named KEVIN..
She changed it to Karen as soon as she could legally do it on her own..

I wish parents would just pick a nice normal name (I have a truly weird name and have spent my life spelling it, pronouncing it, explaining it)

I made sure to give my sons "normal" names that they could pick their own nicknames if they liked.. Scott, Micahle & Steven..

There's also the issue of naming kids after the kids WE think they will be.. I knew a couple who named their little boy BRUNO..the poor little guy wore thick glasses and was not the "football player" type his daddy was so sure he would be.. In fact he insisted on being called "Eddie".. His middle name was Robert..

Parents try too hard in naming their kids.. Just find a name that sounds nice with the last name, and does not spell something weird with the initials..

Trendy names result in the kid being called Melissa-7 or Jacob-6 in kindergarten, because those kids Moms watched the same tv shows

Look back in time...

Susan
Linda
Gloria
Kathleen
Amy
Diane
Katherine
Sylvia
Janice
Deborah
Charlene
Charlotte
Mary
Elizabeth
Peggy
Renee
Joanne
Juliette
Julia
Teresa
Any "boy's nickname" could be attached to a girl. no matter the name...

49. Same here. There's nothing quite like the stigma of an unusual name
Especially for shy kids. I also took great pains to name my son with the most normal name (and middle name) and ones that can be abbreviated to equally normal names or to other variations. One that works fine for a child, and fine for an adult. And his initials don't spell anything bizarre or twistable.

Only kids who grew up with this name issue, I think, really understand how important it is.

Edited on Mon May-08-06 01:25 PM by Patiod
who we all thought were SO sophisticated: Esme and Bryn. Different names, but the girls spun them into badges of honor.

I think odd names are tougher on boys. (my SO is a Ralph....)

12. When I was about, say, 7
the time little girls start getting really nasty and horrible to each other, I thought to myself often... This isn't enough. What can I do to make sure I get horribly teased every day of my life? What more could I do to bring ridicule into my little life?

I've been searching for the answer to that question to this day. And it has now been answered.

Jaime: Jay

Sian (sounds exactly like Sean or Shawn or Shaun, and no need to shorten it)

Kendra : Ken

Or Siobhan (which is pronounced Shi-vonne) - could be masculined by shortening to Chevy.

Okay, okay, I know that last one's a stretch, but at least it would be unique ~ hee hee.

What's with this insistence on gender-bending?

Didn't any of y'all watch "Sisters"? The first two seasons may very well be the best feminist television (and best all-around t.v.) I've seen.

Lessee...I don't believe I've seen Henrietta (Henry) suggested yet. Or Harriet (Harry), which is one of my favorite names for a female child, and one of the only ones I would seriously consider using if I were in the position to name a child.

Uh, on second thought...the Loungers think I shouldn't be giving people baby name tips. And...based on the fact that I just suggested that you name a female child a name that could shorten to Harry...egh. Maybe it is a good thing I'm not actually planning on being a mother...
