Let me say that this is one of the best and most addictive websites, IMHO, since . . . Democratic Underground, par example.
Ever since MTV became the Pretty White Girl and Frat Boy channel when they aren't playing rap videos, Vh1 became the All Nostalgia, no Videos channel, MTV2 became MTV, and Vh1 Classic playing 100 corporate rock oldies for every 1 New Wave/Punk/metal gem they used to play - this is a virtual treasure trove. Genesis Belgian TV footage from 1972, A Captain Beyond concert live, Thomas Dolby videos, Adam & the Ants vids I haven't seen in 20 years, High On Fire live performances, Husker Du's "Don't Want to Know if you are Lonely", Mr. Bungle's banned "Travolta" video, videos from artists that I didn't even knew HAD videos, live shots from underground and unsigned groups . . . I seriously could be on there all night. It harkens back to the days of Night Flight on USA Networks (remember this show from the 80s? It's where I first saw the Dead Kennedys). Who the hell NEEDS eMpTyV when you have this?
Yet, I'm not going to pretend that this Holy Grail of MTV's glory years is going to last. It DOES skirt the bounds of legality although you really have to wonder why. I mean, face it, unlike Napster's and Audio Galaxy's near-perfect and formerly free music, you aren't really watching digital quality footage here. Much of the content is either taped off of VHS or bootleg 8MM, thus leaving it quite grainy. Not to mention MTV hasn't even THOUGHT about playing many of these older videos even on Vh1 classic in years.
MTV has already made a deal with youtube to show some content like "Andy Milonakis" and "Wonder Shozen", and it's only a matter of time before this On Demand video channel becomes corporate, limited and a paysite.
When do you think it's going to happen?
