Well, that was nerve-wracking.
I had my interview this morning. I was expecting to meet with the studio director and an associate level person. Instead, I met with the director and both principals of the company. The company is named after them - it doesn't get any higher than that.

I was trying to print something to take with me this morning, but my printer basically started spewing gobbily gook. That left me a bit frazzled.

I think the actual interview went well. It was very conversational. "So, tell us about yourself." It gave me lots of opportunity to say what I wanted to say. I should know by next week if it will proceed to the next step.

6. Best I could
even with preparation, they hit me hard. "My biggest mistake" is too personal to answer to some hiring shit.

My current job didn't even begin with that garbage, and that's one of the main reasons why I wanted to work here. Next time, when I'm on the job tour, I'm going to wait for a really stupid one and point out to "What's your biggest mistake" I'm going to answer

"Getting myself locked in this room answering these ridiculous and irrelevant questions, why?"

11. I know
But my schedule is a little packed. Three jobs don't leave a lot of extra time in the schedule.

12. Those are part of the psychological profile
Employers — particularly larger ones — aren't so concerned with your skills anymore, since they know they can fire a shotgun once and hit 300 people who have the skills they're looking for. Their concern now is to find people who won't rock the boat, who'll march in lockstep with their Draconian policies.

They ask shit like "Can you think outside the box?" which is a trick question. The apparent proper answer is "Yes," but they also want people who don't define the parameters of "outside the box" for themselves. They mean their box, and only as far outside it as they'll allow.

My favorite is "Are you a team player?" Again, the obvious answer is "Yes." But they mean their team — management. If your team is the rank and file, they don't want you.

If I go for another interview in which such questions are asked, I'll be seriously tempted to say, "Look, can we cut through the bullshit? If not, this is a waste of my time, because if this is what you care about, I don't want to work for you."

14. Exactly my thoughts
especially during those interviews. Do you want someone who can answer your trick questions, or do you want someone who can get things done, and are you really asking these questions because you fear your own lack of skills.

15. That's another valid point
The questions aren't theirs, but fabricated by some "expert" at an HR firm, or perhaps in-house if the company is big enough. Interviewers are generally required to use them without deviation, as they're for the "benefit" of interviewers who can't think for themselves (but are in a supervisory position because the company likes non-thinkers) as well as to rein in those who can.

I had an interview for a copy editor position awhile back at a small daily newspaper. I got the "team player" question with a bit of a twist (which they throw in to confuse you): "What would your co-workers say about you as a team player?" It was about at that point that I thought, "Do I really want to work here?"

Apart from a very brief editing test, I was asked no questions relating to my skills or views on journalism apart from "Why do you want to be a copy editor?"

It all tempts one to print this, take it to an interview, surreptitiously mark the squares and holler "Bingo!" before getting up and walking out.
