any team that beats the Oklahoma Sooners. They are so overrated, and Stoops is a cry baby, who looks like he should be Tiger Woods caddy. My favorite teams, from last year include Texas, Texas Tech, and TCU, they beat OU...yay! Down, with the sooners!...

most years anyway--last year must have really blown your budget :)

I won't hold it against you, though :)

And I can understand how annoying it can be being around fans like that (living around all the cowboy fans in Oklahoma reinforced my distaste for that team )

And I can also understand the impression of Stoops as arrogant. He's definitely cocky, though personally I think he's a great coach and a damn decent human being as well :)

Here's hoping you don't have any more hats in your collection by this time next year ;)

89. Last year i did...
5 losses, i believe, but the year before, just one, USC, cause the Trojans down right embarrassed the OU machine, and thank god. The fans out here, were getting irritating. The year before that...hmm, Kansas State, and LSU in title game, and the year before that...Texas A and M, they also lost to Oklahoma State, but I don't like Oklahoma State either, but I cheer for the cowboys over the Sooners...

My reasons for my OU hate, come from my college days. I went to Haskell Indian Nations Univeristy in Lawrence Kansas. Its an all indian school, and half the students, it seemed were from Oklahoma, and 99% of those idiots were OU fans. I think, its pretty damn funny...when the Oklahoma Sooners mascot, represents the white people who came to Oklahoma to take/buy/use Indian land...its an oxymoron to me. Its like, an Indian being a dallas cowboy fan, it makes no sense to me. 99% of the indian OU fans i met, didn't even care about that aspect of the OU mascot, and didn't care. I was astounded, at just how far, assimilitation, and colonizations has come, for american indians.

I'm not trying to bag on your team, or anything or imply that your team is racist, or offensive, i'm just astounded that american indians support it...thats all...plus, the state of Oklahoma and I dont' mix well, its like trying to mix oil and water...I'm just astounded of the attitudes of most of the people, i have come across, in the dust bowl state...

101. i can understand that, though I'll offer a slightly different perspective
There has actually been some (albeit relatively little, and almost exclusively in progressive circles) discussion about the university's symbolism--not so much the nickname Sooners as the Sooner Schooner that is the mascot for the football team. I think the name will forever stick because its so tied to the state. And though the name originally referred (derogatorily) to people who cheated in the land runs, it was the state's progressives adopted the term in the early decades of the 20th century and transformed it somewhat. And I think the real villains weren't the ones who cheated in the land run (though I'm certainly not absolving them), but rather the power brokers who forced the lands open in the first place.

As for why so many indians from oklahoma are sooner fans, i suppose its simply regionalism, as well as legitimate causes for pride in the institution, whether the hand the univerisity has had in developing various and diverse voices (such as early osage author John Joseph Mathews or seminal chicano writer and scholar Tomas Rivera), its role as the birthplace of the movement against racially-stereotyped mascots, or the current crop of scholars running a very good native studies program.

After I left OU, I wound up at a university (the university of illinois) that continues to use a stereotyped mascot, executing all kinds of intellectual gymnastics to defend and maintain the caricature. I've heard soem truly despicable explanations and justifications for the chief, and it has made me appreciate norman even more. While the situation at ou is far from perfect, there is at least an attempt to accommodate the voices and viewpoints that reflect and respect a diverse heritage.

Anyway, I can understand your distaste, but just thought I'd throw my own (admittedly biased) thoughts out there in defense of the institution.

(And as for those losses, I remember them all well :P)

107. I have some Norman
Edited on Mon May-15-06 09:35 PM by petersond
stories for you, but it would be better served, for my wife to tell you them. My wife also went to Haskell, and also to KU, and through her time at KU she encountered some intense hate from OU, and the KU campus. And KU was touted as a campus, that supported American Indian Studies..in KU, in 97 roundabouts, an indian woman graduated, and decided to wear her traditional garb on graduation day...she got pelted, and taunted, becasue she decided to wear her regalia, instead of the pussy ass colors of KU...and this is coming from an American Indian friendly campus. Haskell is literally down the road from KU, and there have been a lot of tension between both campuses...

I'm not trying to say that OU, is the same, but the two things my wife had to deal with, with that campus, reminds me literally, of how KU acts. I'm sure, that OU has done some good, for american indians. When i was in my BA program with American Indian Studies at haskell, we used OU, and OSU AIS websites, for researching...:)

It is just so amazing, how much assilimilation has taken from American Indians...well, just not american indians, but every culture. I was in a debate/talk with our tax lady in february. She made a comment, about why do indians/hispanics/blacks and all these minorites, think they have to have cultural groups, and why do they think they are so special, and why there are no white groups. I responded to her by saying, its because by in large, in my experience the white's by and large are lazy.

Meaning, the whites, mostly, are lazy in discovering there roots. If a group of irish folk, got togehter, and forced the issue to have a cultural irish group, they are entitled to that and should have it, and would have it, if the irish pushed the issue, if a bunch of swedes, or norwegians, wanted to make their own cultural group, they could do it, if they wanted to. The thing is, with the minorites, they want it, and they pushed/fought very fucking hard to get it..(this discussion was brought on, because my wife is in charge of an american indian resource group at her job, and our tax lady started talking to us about that).

I'm not trying to broad brush, a good friend of mine, has his own viking reinactment group(bunch of norwegian's, and other scandanvians), where they put on fights, and leather working classes, armor making classes, and also cooking classes, about their traditional dishes...this is a prime example, of a white culture, actually looking back into their roots, and i'm sure there are more examples. But, the tax lady was taken aback by my response, i just had to respond to her, because I hear that weak argument alot.

114. oh i don't doubt that, alas, i know some stories as well
norman is far from perfect, and probably quite far from close. The most infamous incident I can recall offhand involved a teepee that the American Indian Student Association set up outside the library during a heritage week. A group of drunk frat boys pissed on the teepee one night, kicked down one of the posts, and generally acted like asses. There were people sleeping inside it at the time. Pathetic. And while that was the most high profile incident that happened while I was there, there were others as well.

Good for you for giving it back to the tax lady. I hate that attitude, but I hear it a lot too. "Why does everyone have to hyphenate? Why can't we all just be Americans?" :eyes: Which, of course, really means why can't everyone just be like me/us ... I remember a co-worker who would complain about how every year cinco de mayo seemed to get more coverage, which was abhorrent because he saw it as an attack on american culture, etc. I asked him if he ever drank green beer on st patrick's day and he shut up about it.

Minorities, as you say, want it, and they pushed/fought very fucking hard to get it--and unfortunatley they still have to fight to maintain it, because the real forces of division try to paint such movements as exclusive, etc, as shown by attitudes such as your tax lady. I can't see any explanation other than racism, since I think few (if any) of those same people would think twice about a viking reenactment group such as you describe--there's no perceived threat or challenge in that. Its only when non-WASP groups do such things that such people get uncomfortable.

115. True
I remember the teepee incident, that was...mid 90's i think? I cannot remember the proper date. I agree with your post, and I was surprised I didn't get flamed! :) Thanks for the civil discourse. I had a rough one in DU last year...if you go to the american indian forum, in the DU groups, you will see a thread, where I posted my FIRST major flame war, I participated in. It was an interesting thread to say the least. The talking points on the thread, to be honest, almost mirrored the reactions I get from the RW, and everyone in general...especially the "the indians lost, get over it, and accept it" mentality...

I dont' see why people are such in a hurry to connect to everyone, all the time. I can understand the importance of being connected, but I can also see the importance, of people being different, and I welcome difference, i don't want to be surronded by all the "same" people, who does really? I am an american citizen, i share that bond with everyone who is also an american citizen, but as far as my roots go, I differ with a lot of other american citizens. I'm american indian, and dane. I have looked and learned from not only my indian heritage, but also my dane side as well...

I agree with your

"Minorities, as you say, want it, and they pushed/fought very fucking hard to get it--and unfortunatley they still have to fight to maintain it, because the real forces of division try to paint such movements as exclusive, etc, as shown by attitudes such as your tax lady."

This statement is so damn true. My wife, works for Walmarts Home Offices in Bentonville Arkansas, and she is charge of the American Indian Resource group, called Tribal Voices. They have fought tooth and nail, to get anything done, and fight tooth and nail, to maintain their group. What is funny, is that most of the OPPOSITION comes from the African American group, and the people in upper management in the Diversity Relations Department.

Its weird, to see how the minorities mesh together. The African Americans don't mix with the other groups either, and especially with GLBT's. In truth, not to divulge to much of my wifes work detail, the African American group, is good hearted, but run by complete idiots, who are trying underhanded means, to make themselves look good, while demeaning other groups, because in truth, all the other groups, are doing 100% more than the African American group, and it makes the AA group look, extremely bad.

But my wife, and the other group leaders, are uniting, to overcome obstacles on a daily basis. Its just amazing, that while minorites want to be recognized, and treated fairly/equal, that in turn, some of these minoritiy groups, piss on others. Its the corporate mentality I guess, stab whoever, whenever, in the back to get whatever you can get your hands on. But, on the other hand, I have seen a lot of examples of how american indians, carry the same sense of pride, of themselves, and screw anyone else mentality, so that trait crosses ethnic/cultural borders as well.

Its just a good human read, of interaction, seeing all of these groups mesh together. Its hard to believe, how when united, they can achieve so much, and yet, when not united, its amazing how much utter ruin, and failure, grows...thanks for the discourse fishwax...and i do have to admit something....

Heaven forbid, I know you are going to laugh at me...I bet 300 bucks on OU to beat Florida State for the title game in Jan of 2001...and thankfully, I won. My boss, and co-workers at the time, were HUGE Florida St. fans, and I got tired of their nonesense as well, so I bet on OU. Granted, OU was helped out, cause Snoop Minnis, and few other players, were not allowed to play in the game, due to NCAA violations....so the truth is out, I did cheer for OU once...*cries*..:)

but he was universally loved by his players, and always taught classes at the university, and only took a teacher's salary at OSU. He was also a strict academic when it came to his players (no pass/no play).

Find a coach living today with the integrity of Woody, and I'll buy you a fudge sundae.

Although Woody had a hot temper, his legacy is much, much more and he is loved throughout this state for who the real Woody was.

http://tulanegreenwave.cstv.com/sports/m-footbl/sched/tul-m-footbl-sched.html

And the first one's SMU on 9/30, a "W" if ever there was one, even for the once-mighty Wave.

Plus they started playing LSU again (the week before, this year)!

Maybe people'll start paying attention to them now, just like with Jazz Fest, etc.

Seems like you're talking favorite.

32. One of the best games I've ever been to was an Alabama game
Against OU in Norman in 2002. Alabama pulled an onside kick on the opening kickoff and really had OU off balance for most of the game after that. Don't know how OU came back to win that, but it was an incredible game. And the 'Bama fans I met were top notch. It was a nice (friendly) rivalry that developed between the teams during that home-and-home series. I hope they'll resume it sometime in the near future. :hi:

33. hey thanks!
Ya'll beat us two years in a row, so I wasn't too happy about that. But I'm very pleased with the sportmanship that both sides showed. Oklahoma fans have class! I, too, would like to see the series resume... and not just for the selfish reason of an attempt at revenge. ;)

Best of luck in the upcoming season! Especially against Nebraska! That makes me think of my late grandma. She didn't know much of anything about football or sports in general. But for some reason, unknown to me, she had a dislike for Nebraska. Whenever I'd start talking about college football she'd start trash-talking on the Cornhuskers. She never said "Nebraska," it was always "the Cornhuskers," with sarcasm dripping from her mouth. And my grandma was a very nice woman. I'm still a little puzzled by it.

Thanks for the message. Boomer Sooner, and Roll Tide! :hi:

I always watched that game (when I was a kid). I can't believe that I'm so out of touch that I didn't realize the change for all these years. I guess I must confess my SECentricism.

If someone decided the Auburn/Alabama game would be cancelled, I think the Auburn and Alabama fans would (for once) unite, and kick the decider's ass! ;)

66. Well, good luck.
We're lucky in that we have always been a part of the biggest division of intercollegiate athletics, unlike the Dakotas and Montana....also in that our state gov't did it right w/ our population. We only have one university, so it gets all the funding and support from the dingbats in Cheyenne. We don't have to fund 4 or 5 schools, like you guys. Academically, it's a big plus, too...we are a very good school academically. Thanks for supporting...coming to a game this year? I recommend coming for the Air Force game, let me know, my friends and I usually throw a great tailgate.

We were planning on playing you this year, and we had a choice of playing either Wyoming or Ball State, but we chose to play Ball State instead. We also have a big payday game with the Minnesota Gophers, so that'll be good for the money and exposure. As far as I-AA teams go, we're doing pretty well. I hope we can play Wyoming sometime in the near future. Wyoming's AD is an NDSU alum, so I know he's been trying to get a game together with us.

We used to be Division II several years ago. We've been I-AA for three years now.

We're in the I-AA Great West Football Conference.

Here's the website: http://greatwestfootball.cstv.com/

We play this year (among other teams) Minnesota, Ball State, Stephen F. Austin, Cal-Poly and Georgia Southern. The only DII team we play this year is the home opener against Concordia-St. Paul.

Besides, we wouldn't ask for a home-and-home with Wyoming, just a one-game guarantee payday.

:) I almost always cheer for Wyoming, since I grew up there and had a bunch of friends who went to UW. I catch their games whenever I can, and unless they someday play my sooners I'll generally cheer for them. There is one exception on their schedule every year though--I always cheer for CSU :) (my grandpa taught there and fort collins was like a second home to me.) I suppose I'm one of the few people in the world who's a fan of both :))

**on edit** where'd you grow up? I grew up in Lyman, went to HS in Green River, been in Laramie since '90, except for a brief 6 years on the Dead tour.

102. awfully weird I know, but l'm just a victim of my circumstances
My grandpa, like I said, plus both my parents were from fort collins and went to CSU :)

Yeah, I cheer for the Cowboys except in the border war; and, to be fair, I'm not exactly crushed when the Cowboys win :) And (oddly enough) in basketball I'm more apt to cheer for the Cowboys over the Rams. My grandparents used to take me to CSU games over Christmas Break when I was a kid, and I remember one year I got to go to the UW-CSU game. I was one of the very few people there cheering for the Cowboys, sitting about six rows behind the Rams bench :) (Don't know if you follow basketball as well, but this back when the pokes had dembo, leckner, et al. in the late 80s--that particular game went into TRIPLE overtime, and the cowboys won. It was great.)

Lyman, eh? That's cool. I grew up (mostly) in Sheridan--left there in '93 to go to school in Oklahoma. Like I said, though, I had a lot of friends who went to Laramie and still have a few friends and relatives there, though they're getting fewer. I try to get there whenever we head home, but its been a couple of years now since I've been back there ...

Rally sons of Notre Dame,
Sing her glory, and sound her fame
Raise her Gold and Blue,
And cheer with voices true,
Rah! Rah! For Notre Dame.

We will fight in every game
Strong of heart and true to her name.
We will ne'er forget her
And we'll cheer her ever,
Loyal to Notre Dame.

Chorus:
Cheer, cheer for Old Notre Dame
Wake up the echoes cheering her name,
Send the volley cheer on high,
Shake down the thunder from the sky,
What though the odds be great or small
Old Notre Dame will win over all,
While her loyal sons are marching
Onward to Victory!!!

I say this before every Michigan game:

Notre Dame, our Mother
Tender, strong and true
Proudly in the heavens,
Gleams thy gold and blue.
Glory's mantle cloaks thee
Golden is thy fame,
And our hearts forever,
Praise thee, Notre Dame.
And our hearts forever,
Love thee, Notre Dame.

NOTRE DAME OUR MOTHER...PRAY FOR US!!!

123. Iowa Hawkeyes!
Should be pretty good again this year under the direction of coach Kirk Ferentz.

Nobody does more with less than Ferentz. His first couple of recruiting classes were ranked 10th and 11th in the Big Ten. When those same recruits were Jrs and Srs, they went undefeated in the Big Ten. GO HAWKS!!
