I'm rooting for the gators
Screw it-I'm tired of playing all nicey with those human types. We clearly need a good thinning and I think that people DUMB enough to move into the gators habitat should be the first to go.

WHEN WILL THESE PEOPLE LEARN?
Why would people live in an area where they know this happens? Where they SHOULD know this could happen?

(sound familiar does it?)

I have to say that nabbing the runner not only exhibited lightning quickness but pretty good taste and MUCH style points.

1. But, we're at the TOP of the food chain, ain't we?
Don't that automatically mean that we can build a home anywhere we please, 250 million years of evolution be damned? we're SMARTER than alligators, and don't ever forget it.

2. I said the same thing about the bears...
when I lived in Joisey.

There's no reason to move into bear country, but if you do-- prepare to meet your neighbors.

8. See, this is what almost did in the buffaloes
they don't hide so well and there really were very few runners back in the day.

If only the buffaloes had learned to swim.

The only buffaloes left are now raised for human consumption, which angers me.

... a human handbag. When I do, I'll stop cheering for the gators.

4. I have to say
that I agree with you. I had similar thoughts yesterday. Why kill the gator for doing what gators do? They are predators, everything else is prey. Sorry the runner lost her life, however, why run close to areas with gators? It is Florida and gators were there first!

6. I call for a global war on gators
3 of us in one week against an invisible enemy, only one of millions who hate us for our freedom to move into their lunchroom. This agression will not stand!

16. humans aren't natural prey for gators......
....in fact, alligators have a natural fear of humans. take a walk through everglades national park and you'll see.

the gators that are attacking people in florida probably have been fed by humans. this causes them to lose their fear of people and then they start associating humans with food. this is when they become dangerous. that's why it's illegal to feed them.

the reason they killed the gator is probably because they want to remove a dangerous animal from a residential area. they don't kill all gators in residential areas in florida. only ones that become dangerous. plus, they probably wanted to retrieve the rest of the corpse of the victim. there's always the possibility that the gator didn't actually kill her but that she was killed first and then tossed into the water for the gator to eat. in this case, i'd think they'd want to get as much of the body back to do an autopsy.

17. Good point
I guess it would be easy to conceal a crime, if you threw the body in an area full of gators.

21. yeah, my guess is that the gator did attack her......
...but you have to investigate these things anyways.

i lived in miami for four years and did a lot of volunteer work at everglades national park. in fact, i'm a reptile freak. i love gators and crocs. i've been around many wild gators that have not been fed by people and also by many that have been fed. there's a huge difference in the behavior of the two. wild gators generally keep their distance, fed gators make a bee-line towards people on the shore. in shark valley (the north section of everglades national park) the gators have become accustomed to people because there are so many visitors walking the trails...many times you'll see the gators sunning themselves on the trail and you just walk right by them and they ignore you. if you approach them too closely, they high tail it into the water.

in the states, crocs and gators get a bad rap because of their association with the man-eaters in australia and africa. both the american alligator and the american crocodile are shy creatures. potentially dangerous for sure, but generally very afraid of humans.

9. They still think that alligators are a threat, so they need to kill it.
The sad fact of the matter is that the alligators are no threat, and survive as a species (like every other species) simply as a result of those who realize the only threat to the planet is man.

23. yes, they're lightning quick but they are also fast.........
...i've seen claims that gators can sprint up to 30 or 40mph for short distances. i'm not sure i ever saw one go this fast on land but i've seen them go pretty fast.

25. Evidently it's mating season right now
Which means you have a LOT of edgy gators crowded into a smaller space, which means they're probably eating up all the local snack food and getting a bit hungry.

So add that factor to the ongoing, relentless habitat encroachment by new developments and you're going to lose a few humans here and there (not to mention dogs and cats).

We're the most aggressive and destructive species on the planet, so the 'gators may have won a few this weekend, but eventually they'll be wiped out. There won't be any place left for them to go.
