The situation was quite hilarious, really - me, the sole white guy, and, I think, the only guy, in a theater full of gray-haired Japanese elderly - especially given the misogynistic attitude of the Johnny Depp character, the constant use of the word "cunt" and other foul language, and the subject nature of the movie.

I saw it in English, with Japanese subtitles, and my seat-mate, who speaks both languages, said "The subtitles really did not capture the full character of the English". :rofl:

Great movie - I think Johnny Depp deserves an Oscar for this one. Brilliant movie, all around.

A friend of mine also saw it & liked the movie... but, she's here in the US.

And, I don't think many subtitles capture the true spirit of a foreign language - just about every Chinese movie translated into English loses a decent amount in translation. I think "Crouching Tiger..." was the only one I've heard from Chinese that they did a good job translating. Example, the "Landlady" in Kung Fu Hustle is really translated as "Old Fat Pig Mother" - but, to a degree where it is also a mild curse.

I have as yet to see it. It was in such limited release here and I missed it when it did get to the theatre. I will have to buy the DVD.
