Well, just who is that on the Big Board? |
|
Hint: It is not John Lennon, who never had the monopoly on the peace sign that he claimed.
Score one for Oasis.

2. So one of the Gallagher brothers is giving DU a 'fuck you'? |
|
That's really nice.
(That gesture has the same meaning as a middle finger, by the way.)

The punks did that when I was a teen, to be anti-hippie. It was meant to show anarchy.

4. Probably had something to do with British influence on the punk scene, too |

...that gesture's had an offensive meaning in Britain since long before there WAS such a thing as the 'peace sign'.
There's a story (possibly apocryphal) that it has its origins in the Hundred Years' War, when, supposedly, the French threatened to cut off the index and middle fingers (used to draw a bow) of any English longbowmen they captured...supposedly after the French were routed at Agincourt, the English archers taunted them by holding up their intact fingers, as a way of saying 'fuck you, you French bastards, we kicked your arses. Hah!'

5. I've heard a similar story, but it was just about the index finger |
|
I just remember when the punk scene hit in the mid to late 70s and seeing the punks doing the backward peace thing and finding out it was another one of their anti-hippie gestures. I never really questioned it beyond that.
