Bears Eat Monkey in Front of Zoo Visitors
46 minutes ago

AMSTERDAM, Netherlands - Bears killed and ate a monkey in a Dutch zoo in front of horrified visitors, witnesses and the zoo said Monday. In the incident Sunday at the Beekse Bergen Safari Park, several Sloth bears chased the Barbary macaque into an electric fence, where it was stunned.

It recovered and fled onto a wooden structure, where one bear pursued and mauled it to death.

The park confirmed the killing in a statement, saying: "In an area where Sloth bears, great apes and Barbary macaques have coexisted peacefully for a long time, the harmony was temporarily disturbed during opening hours on Sunday."

"Of course the habitats here in the safari park are arranged in such a way that one animal almost never kills another, but they are and remain wild animals," it said.

15. Mental anguish for seeing animals as they should naturally act?
Bears kill and eat.

Yes they also eat veggie matter, but they are also driven to eat flesh to survive.

They aren't evil when they do that.

31. This reminds me of my Australian Shepherd....
She's quite the "naughty" girl... she chases chipmunks and bunny rabbits (and has been successful in the past at catching them and torturing them to death).

It's not her fault... it's my fault. I've learned to keep her on a leash at all times in warm weather when the animals are out and about. If I don't, she becomes a killing machine. I don't want her to catch the little animals in my yard, so I keep her on a leash at all times now.

Same situation in this story... the bears did what comes natural to them. They did NOTHING wrong. It was the zookeepers who are at fault; the monkeys should never have been with the bears.

perhaps the bear was just waiting patiently, and the salmon came too late...The damn wild animal! That ungrateful bear should be put out in the wild...Ha, when does a bear come across a monkey in his natural habitat....it looked like a nice tasty appetizer to the bear and where is that white wine anyway....Monkey tastes very good with white wine, umm umm!

These animals are stuck in man-made shitholes, certainly not there voluntarily for human amusement...One expects, table manners, politeness or gratefulness, I guess an animal is suppose to be there on display for the kids?

Go backpacking kids, and don't tie your backpacks up on ropes and you'll see bears, eating your peanut butter sandwiches... Nice little monkeys!

37. We can't take sides in this or it will be like Adlai Stevenson said
If we are to court to address the problems between cat and bird we would also be forced to adjudicate in the age old problem of bird v. worm and so on. Stevenson was so witty. Haven't had anyone like that since.

52. Knee-jerk reactions:
Conservative: What did the monkey do to make the bear so mad? We need to build more cages.
Liberal: What would we have done, in the bear's paws? We need better bear schools.
Libertarian: As monkeys become more scarce, market forces will drive the bears to conserve monkey populations
Socialist: Hmmm... wait... that wasn't in the 5-year bear plan or the 5-year monkey plan...
Bolshevik: Serves that bourgeois monkey right
Communist: There was no monkey. The bear never ate him. And he only ate him because the monkey attacked him. Only bears were injured in this unfortunate incident.
Neoconservative: That bear was trained in Tehran and Damascus. It's a member of the Axis of Ursa.

48. Now, now, the bears are innocent until proven guilty in court of
law. What is this rush to judge the bears? The monkey was probably a lying scum with a history of mental illness and drug abuse anyway; and the bears have photo time/date stamps that show they were in other places at the time of this so-called "attack", if it really occured...
