The original by Bo Diddley One by the Woolies from the Nuggets box set One from a Ronnie Hawkins and the Hawks CD One from the Last Waltz soundtrack Two by George Thorogood (One studio, one live) One from a live Townes Van Zandt CD

I have two versions by Herbie Hancock. I have two versions by Mongo Santamaria. I have one version, on cassette, by the old university big band (featuring me).
I may have another version that escapes me for the time being.
I once knew a guy who was collecting versions of Summertime, from Porgy And Bess.

Ben Webster's version is by far my favorite. He and his saxophone created some real magic with that song!

Jeff Buckley's is probably the most famous, but I have some good ones by Dylan (he's trashed and screws up the lyrics), Sheryl Crowe, Tom Waits, Moxy Fruvous, and Neko Case.

Leonard Cohen's "Hallelujah"?
I'd love to get those versions. Napster doesn't have them.

not intentionally, but it turns up in many Christmas song collections.
Done right, it is a haunting song.
Many of the cornball Christmas standards, too, since everyone does them.

|
Edited on Fri May-19-06 08:27 PM by Hissyspit
I collected them for a mix tape - very entertaining.
The one by Richard Harris, of course. Liza Minelli Jimmy Webb does a version; he wrote it. Liberace. A version by the guy who did the music for M.A.S.H. Donna Summer. Waylon Jennings did a version back in the 1960s, too. Lots more. Some really weird ones.

35. I think it's "So in Love" or "The Way You Look Tonight." |
|
At last count, I had THREE CD versions of Kiss Me, Kate -- the one with Alfred Drake, the one with Brian Stokes Mitchell, and a studio version from Angel.
Hi, my name is CBHagman, and I'm a musical-holic!
On top of that, I have a thing for Verve jazz vocals of all the great American songwriters. That means I definitely have Dinah Washington's version of "So in Love," and probably Ella Fitzgerald's, too, but my memory's getting fuzzy. That would mean at least five versions, if you don't count reprises within the show Kiss Me, Kate.
I also have a number of versions of of "The Way You Look Tonight." I even have Hugh Laurie and Imelda Staunton leading a singalong of that particular tune on The Peter's Friends video.
