When Abraham Lincoln began his Presidency, many people thought he was an idiot, a country bumpkin, based on the press log splitting anecdotes. The President has a rural accent - he said "thar" instead of "there" - that didn't play well with the Eastern elites, and he tended to phrase things in disarming anecdotes, particularly when he wished to keep his options open.
However Lincoln was also given to soaring eloquence and when he used them, his anecdotes always had relevance and were focused on the problem at hand as a means of elucidating the matter.
He would have never described his Presidency as being about catching a fish.
Also of course Lincoln backed up his words with accomplishments. When his Presidency was over no one doubted his intellect, his wisdom and his humanity. With Bush, now almost everyone (excluding 29% who are on the same intellectual level as Bush) doubts his intellect, his wisdom, and his humanity.
When I think of the cretin that now occupies that White House sits where Lincoln sat, I certainly can do no more than weep.
