Did anybody just see the brawl in the Cubs/Sox game?
Edited on Sat May-20-06 01:56 PM by wndycty
AJ just ran over the Cubs catcher Barrett in a clean play at home plate and Barret sucker punched him, both benches cleared and it got ugly.

Heres the punch just before it landed:

Four ejected after Cubs-ChiSox melee
Catcher Barrett punches Pierzynski after being barreled over at plate

CHICAGO - A.J. Pierzynski barreled over Cubs catcher Michael Barrett, who punched the White Sox catcher and started a bench-clearing melee in the second inning that led to four ejections Saturday.

Pierzynski slapped the plate after the collision as the ball got away from Barrett. The Cubs catcher got up, grabbed Pierzynski and punched him. The White Sox’s Scott Podsednik, who had been in the on-deck circle, wrestled Barrett to the ground.

White Sox center fielder Brian Anderson, who hit the bases loaded sacrifice fly to score Pierzynski, then got into a fight with Cubs first baseman John Mabry.

As Pierzynski went back to the dugout, he raised his hands in the air while a soldout crowd at U.S. Cellular Field roared. He slapped hands with his teammates.

1. Thanks, I forgot the game was on. Was watching 7-Year Itch.
(I also somehow forgot how gorgeous MM was. I'll just have to tear myself away.)

2. Huh?
Wha....?

I thought it was a 2:05 start...they're playing already AND I'M MISSING IT?

Shit.

And I can't find it on Extra Innings (they're not showing anything until 5) and it's not on WGN. Has Fux already started its regional shit?

DAMN it!!

My Barrett's out, I take it...

6. ARRRGGGHHHH!!
I HATE this regional bullshit. Since I live in Colorado, once it starts up I almost Never get my Cubbies on Saturday. I have to rely on the kindness of strangers and MLB.com -- and I've got dialup so MLB.com is all but useless.

3. So that's what that was.
I head the guys in the next room yelling "OH SHIT!" and stuff like that, so I peeked in. I thought they were just watching a game. Didn't realize there was a brawl. :o

8. I just watched it back on TiVo. . .
. . .Barrett got embarrassed because he got run over by AJ, then AJ smacked the plate with his hand, then Barrett sucker punched him, Scotty Pods tackled Barrett. . .it was classic Cubs/Sox rivalry.

9. If the Cubs had a headcase contest between Zambrano, Barret & Walker
it would probably end in a 3-way tie.

12. It was good to see the Sox rise above it by re-loading the bases...
and Iguchi hitting a grand slam. Show those louts that their antics may fly up at Wrigley, but on the South Side the game is all about excellent performance.

19. God forbid he resolve to perform better in the game as his vengeance
This is just another typical incident of the Cubs being unable to play by the rules. I blame MLB for not cracking down on Sammy Sosa for corking his bat. That allowed the Cubs to think that their violations of the rules are acceptable.

Drunk fan throws ball at Cubs outfielder
Woman nearly nails Jones in face from bleachers in right; Cubs beat Nats

CHICAGO - Even a stellar outing by Carlos Zambrano couldn’t prevent Jacque Jones from being targeted by a home fan.

Zambrano pitched four-hit ball through eight innings, helping the Chicago Cubs beat the Washington Nationals 4-0 Tuesday night for just their second win in 14 games.

However, Jones, who has been booed repeatedly during his first season with the Cubs, received quite a scare before the top of the ninth inning as a fan in the right-field bleachers threw a ball that nearly hit Jones in the face. According to Cubs officials, the woman was drunk and detained by ballpark security, but not arrested. They wouldn’t release her name.

“I threw a ball to Juan (Pierre) and then turned around to get in my position and the ball came whizzing past my head,” Jones said. “It went right past my face. I’m not going to let one person ruin my time here. I signed here for three years and I signed to help this team win.”

:sarcasm: That's what they always say.

At least when a drunk Sox fan attacks, they go after the opponent.

What other "violations of the rules" are we talking about?

33. His numbers dropped off after he got beaned-- he never really got
his confidence back-- and last I heard he wasn't playing anywhere after a bad stay with the Orioles. And a week suspension seems to be about average.
(Yikes, I can't believe I'm defending that selfish showboat Sosa... )

Scotty Pods tackled Barrett and Anderson jumped on Mabry. . .it was a beautiful thing as it relates to team work. You want to avoid these situations, however when they arise you want to see a team stick together.

28. Yes everyone should go right in except the pitcher.
I excuse pitchers from brawling because an ejection of a pitcher from the game can seriously screw up the manager's pitcher-rotation plans. I'm just glad that the Cubs were held at bay and their fiendish terrorization of the Southern Chicago was brought to a swift end.
