Is your town "gay friendly"?
If you knew a gay couple, would you encourage them to move the town you live in because they would be welcome, safe, and treated with respect? Where is the town?

8. I doubt it
I have heard some rather negative comments about gay people and gay marriage, including from people who I wouldn't expect it from, women too. I don't know of any openly gay people here.
I live in rural Wisconsin.

9. Sure
I'm in Sacramento. Half the town is Bay Area expats so while the town isn't wildly liberal (by California standards anyhow) on other issues, sexuality really is a non-issue for the vast majority of people here. We also have very few fundies (or particularly religious people of any sort) here.

Just steer clear of Placer county, it's like Orange county's redneck twin and that's where the Sacramento area's fundies and other right wing assholes live.

11. I would say so.
It does run Republican, but it's pretty socially liberal. I've been openly gay since I was 16. I've never had a single problem. The only thing that sucks is the only gay bar around here blows. Straight women seem to love it though.

I live in Rockaway, NJ.

21. Pittsburgh, PA.
Yes. It's pretty diverse in many ways and most people are open to all kinds of different things. I had an very openly flamboyant gay male student in my class last semester and he was one of the more popular kids in the class. Everybody liked him, and nobody ever made fun of him or ostracized him or anything. I saw him at the bus stop one day holding hands with his boyfriend waiting for the bus on a busy street (there were probably 50 people standing around or walking by), and I didn't see anyone even really noticing them, much less harrassing them or giving them nasty looks or anything. So yeah, I think I would recommend Pittsburgh as gay-friendly. They have some gay clubs here too, and I know that the local gay community does all kinds of stuff on cable access (ok, so maybe that last on is not the best recommendation ever...)

26. Greensboro's gay-neutral... a few +'s and -'s.
If I had to say move anywhere, move to Brighton, Sussex, England. Definitely gay friendly there.

But Greensboro's good. A couple of the small to mid size companies I know out here are owned by openly gay people, one my wife worked for. The owner makes no bones about it, and everyone who works there is comfortable with the fact that different people have different sexualities. Definitely a place to work if you want to come 'out' openly in a very supportive environment (any which way you want). A few years ago, the owner and his SO adopted some Vietnamese twins - adorable, they were!

Mark.

It is a very, very good place to work. The only reason I left was I lived in Winston-Salem and the commute was making me crazy. Greensboro/Winston-Salem are nice places to live if you're gay or lesbian. Charlotte too.

30. All I know is
there was a gay (lesbian) couple who owned the weekly newspaper, and AFAIK they were treated with respect.

Well, except by that city councilman they hounded a few years ago who retaliated by posting a web site linking them to lesbian porn. But in the end, I think that actually worked in their favor.

One of 'em's running for the county board of supes now, and I hope she wins.

35. Pretty neutral.
One does see a few gay couples without any raised eyebrows.

I'm sure there are neighbourhoods of the local town where one might not be made very welcome - but in most places once people realise that their property prices aren't going to collapse as a result, they wouldn't be bothered either way.

IIRC Minneapolis is second only to SF for gays as a percentage of the population. We have openly gay politicians and openly gay married couples here. Plus it's the only state that was bluer in 2004 than it was in 2000.

46. Arlington, MA
Our next door neighbors were the first same sex wedding we attended.

I've heard that the high school was one of the first (the first?) to have a Gay-Straight alliance club (is it a club?).

It's actually pretty darn cool I think being that we're a community with close ties to the birth of this nation and the ideals of the revolution - you know that liberal stuff about equality and justice yadda yadda yadda - and we seem to continue to lead the way in the cause of expanding human rights and equality under the law.
