The Da Vinci Code movie opens: Fundies of the world go nuts!!!
Edited on Sun May-21-06 02:43 PM by Julius Civitatus
The critics, fearing the wrath of the religious right, preemptively gave the movie nasty readings. Fundamentalists of all religious boycotted the release.

It has made, so far $229 million in the opening weekend! And the viewers LOVED IT, wondering if they saw the same movie the critics reviewed. I saw the movie at a full, sold-out theater in NY, and I thought the movie was EXCELLENT! Having read the book helps, s I notice people who did not read it had a harder time following the plot.

Here's some photos from around the world of fundies protesting the release of the film. It certainly has united fundies from every religion! From Catholic to protestant, fro mMuslim to Orthodox:

26. I would probably call it a work of Historical Fiction
Meaning that the plot & characters are fictional but the story includes historical facts throughout the book. This whole controversy about Jesus possibly being married to Mary Magdeline and having kids was not some brainchild work of fantasy created by TDC author Dan Brown. This has been something debated throughout history and all those ideals brought up in the book - Priory, Templar Knights, Nicene Council (in which protestants profess a creed to on a regular basis) and Opus Dei are all real.

If you follow up a bit on the Plagerism lawsuit that TDC and Dan Brown went through a few months before the movie, it's because many of those ideas were pulled from works of Non-Fiction about the history of Jesus, Mary Magdeline and the bible.

Fundies would like to think that the Bible was created from divine inspiration and delivered to man. It wasn't. Some 300+ years after Jesus's death, Roman ruler Constatine created a council to put together the first written account of what we now call the bible. The books in the bible were not the only ones but the ones that best served the council's purpose. And like any good book there are usually many rewrites. It's interesting about the history of Mary Magdeline where some biblical scholars thought that the church found her story to be such a threat that it was better to downgrade Mary to a prostitute in order to minimize her importance.

10. My son works at the local theater.
He was there friday from 8:30am till 6pm. Only one person showed up passing out flyers in the parking lot. It was his impression that most people were there to see Over The Hedge, a kids movie. I live in a very boring town.

13. Okay. I really don't get it. I just don't. I read and enjoyed the book.
I saw and enjoyed the movie.

I don't feel like my spiritual beliefs have in any way been threatened.

Funny how people seem to be frightened of a work of fiction. (And it's far from the first piece of fiction to portray any portion of the Church in a less-than-positive light.)

BTW - I agree with you that it helps to have read the book before seeing the movie. Knowing the book can help fill in some of the gaps of the faster-paced movie.

20. You may be up to something...
because I've never seen so many critics being so dead-wrong in a long time. The movie rocked!
:)

What I find most disturbing is how many critics spent their column discussing theology, and even quoting scripture to argue the plot is not true. Have these idiots even heard of the novel? Did anyone tell them about the novel in the last four years?

Check out this f@ckwad. My favorite worst review of the movie, and probably the best example of what's going on:

http://www.rottentomatoes.com/click/movie-1152324/reviews.php?critic=columns&sortby=default&page=1&rid=1507583

Count the ways she is wrong.

Also, count the times she even quotes scripture.

17. if god so loved this world that he gave his only son to save it...
then why wouldn't that son; his son, jesus, the word made flesh, the light of this world; give a child of his own to this world, a creation of his father, to know, love & experience

maybe i'm simply, but i do not see a conflict here

21. I enjoyed it as well
I went alone, and there were no protesters.

I've also been watching a lot of the documentaries on the History Channel, National Geographic and others about the book and the film. Also, there were two specials on Freemasonry, which is also implicated in some of the stories on the Knights Templar.

The one thing that is repeated over and over again in almost ALL of these shows is that MOST of it is fiction. While there have been stories about Mary and Jesus for centuries, and while there might supposedly be cover-ups within the Catholic church and other Christian sects, the ideas covered in the Da Vinci Code are all based on pure imagination.

Hey--if people are so damned stupid to believe that George W. Bush is anything other than a complete fuck-up and liar, they won't have any trouble believing that the Da Vinci Code is real and sacrilegious!
