Legendary crooner Robert Goulet seeking Canadian citizenship

TORONTO (CP) - The rich baritone and magnetic stage presence of Robert Goulet have garnered him fame, wealth and international stardom but after a lifetime of accolades one prize still eludes him - Canadian citizenship.

The square-jawed singer says he longs for official recognition of his ties to the Great White North, where he spent his formative years honing the deep voice and matinee idol swagger that first took Broadway by storm some 40 years ago.

"I feel Canadian," Goulet says by phone from his Las Vegas home.

"I tried to become a citizen for a long time but the red tape is going to drive me nuts.

2. Nope...born in Lawrence, Massachusetts

His father died when he was 13 and he moved to Edmonton, Canada, a year later. Goulet won a singing scholarship to the Royal Conservatory of music in Toronto and in 1951 made his concert debut at Edmonton in Handel's Messiah. Goulet was also a DJ on Canada's CKUA in Edmonton for two years.

When reprehensor and I were a'courtin' long distance, we listened to CKUA, and dedicated songs to each other for Valentine's Day.

6. Goulet like Leonard Bernstein were born on Lawrence but moved..

away when they were infants. Lawrence is my hometown and some years ago they honored Goulet and Bernstein. Both of which only lived there for several months.

think he's a Canadian...there was an urban legend that Goulet in his younger days supposedly forgot the words to the Star Spangled Banner and the excuse given was 'he was Canadian'.

I remember hearing him years ago giving an interview on Canadian radio that he said that rumour followed him around his whole career--he never forgot the words and he wasn't Canadian.
