Poll question: Jesus poll. Did he exist? Son of God. A Man? |
|
Just wondering what the DU consensus is. My choice is #2.

21. Been flamed in the religion forum, I guess |
|
I never go in there. I can't be bothered with arguments over religion; they're pointless. Either you believe or you don't. Theists and atheists alike should both learn to leave each other alone.

You're on safe ground now, but the minute you post in R/T, me and my grouchy atheist doppelgangers will tear you to shreds...

there is no point in discussing religion with people who are just going to call you a "blind believer" and an idiot for your beliefs.
and the thread I'm talking about was in GD but eventually got moved to R/T (i quit posting then)

And we would never do it to you, we like your animations too much to make you a sacrifice to Satan. But the minute you lose your touch...

The Bible has been so bastardized through the ages by those seeking advantage vis a vis church dogma, by human errors in translation, by editorializing and omission. Also some tend to invoke the Old Testament eye for an eye rhetoric as an excuse for their bad behavior, ignoring the more pithy (and beautiful) Psalms, Proverbs, and New Testament.
I guess after years of study, I'm an agnostic.

12. I think he existed, but his story was probably exaggerated a little... |
|
Edited on Sun May-21-06 05:36 PM by primate1
His name was probably Jeff, or something, not Jesus. And he was probably a masseuse (hence the whole healing with his hands thing), you know, not the messiah. So people would come away from their massages and say "Oh man, you gotta go see Jeff, he's a miracle worker!" He had a few fans, so someone decided to write a book about him, but you know, who the hell wants to read a book about a massuse named Jeff? So they sexed it up with a little magic, and there you go.
Oh yeah, I picked #2.

15. His name was probably "Jeshua" |
|
Edited on Sun May-21-06 05:39 PM by ZombieNixon
"Jeshua" multiplied by Greek equals "Jesus"
Jeshua Ben Joseph is a pretty good guess as to his full name.
Jeshua "Magic Hands" Ben Joseph...yep, that's the man. :silly:

But Jeff just seems funnier than Jeshua, haha. (Also, I stole the joke for the most part, and Jeff was the name used by the original comedian.)

20. I don't think he ever existed |
|
There was no village at Bethlehem at the time he was supposedly born, his story is an obvious amalgam of previous deities (primarily Mithra, but there's a little Osiris thrown in there) and it's really fishy for there to be no contemporaneous or nearly contemparaneous evidence for an important individual in a Roman occupied land, since the Romans documented *everything.* Also, the gospel accounts are rather contradictory, with the writers unable to agree on even basic but vitally important facts like the geanelogy of Jesus.
