7. Writers' group worked pretty well for my gf and me |
|
These 4 1/2 years later, we never seem to go back to the writers' group (though we would if the fun and talented people hadn't left, by and large).
If you don't feel like you're a writer, just join any group whose activities you have an interest in. And don't worry about it. Have fun, and you'll either meet somebody or you won't.
Oh! If David Sedaris ever gives a reading anywhere near you, go. Arrive early and strike up conversations. The audience is like a mix between the Democratic Underground, some kind of NPR listeners conclave, and the 1970s personified (if that isn't redundant). Sedheads are a good bunch.

You should do things that interest you, (other than cat and dog rescue) if you want to meet men with whom you have something in common.

37. Absolutely! A match that wouldn't be made ever based on personal |
|
preferences. That doesn't make me a snob, just a gal of a different genre.
See, I didn't exactly date the jocks in high school. I wasn't their kind of gal really... not the cheerleader type.
I'm just not a sporty kinda gal.
And sporty kinda fellas don't dig chicks like me.
It's all good!!!!

40. No, what makes you a snob is... |
|
...the fact that you don't even allow someone to fit outside of your norm for what you believe a "jock" to be or what a jock wants. THAT makes you a snob. And no, it's not all good.

43. This is purely psychological and has nothing to do with snobbery. |
|
Edited on Tue May-23-06 11:27 AM by radwriter0555
All people fall within specific psychological profiles and the sporty type mentality isn't one that I mesh with. I have a hard enough time speaking with people that I have actual things in common with. Trust me, I'm VERY boring to sporty fellas; they have no interest in me!

13. Get a job at a truck stop and.... |
|
And discover a whole wide world of diamonds in the ... very ... rough.
Just had this experience not an hour ago:
I'm at the Pilot truckstop in Brooks, OR right now. My Freightliner parked in the yard. I walk in and ask the girl if I had any showers left on my fuel card (you get freebees for buying fuel). She started flirting with me. So anyway, I get everything resolved and head out to the truck for my shower stuff (change of clothing, etc), and as I'm walking I think to myself, "Honey, you're cute and all, but that unibrow has seriously got to go!" I speak the gospel truth here.

Or "dry" enough. In a few more months, you may be looking back and thinking "That girl with the unibrow was pretty cute. I wonder if she still works there?"
I know I am. Which truck stop, exactly, was it again?

44. Ugh, I used to hate it when I was single and I just wanted to |
|
go grocery shopping. I was so self conscious about the stares and leary sneers, I would almost literally run around the store, throwing things in the basket as quickly as I could. And, when they would ask if I needed help out to my car, sometimes I almost yelled when I said, "NO!!"...running out to my car!
I would like to strangle the person or people who started using the grocery store as a singles club!
Some of the more interesting people I met, when single, were in my apartment building, a photography class I took, and the gym. But that was 13 years ago- things might have changed since then.

And don't knock it as a bunch of untalented geeks playing "Hey gang, let's put on a show!". I've seen some astonishing talent in community theater from people who do it for recreation and the love of it.

24. Whatever it is that you can be passionate about |
|
I think most (good) people are attracted to those individuals who display passion, self-worth, determination, etc. To that end, I think that you should get involved in the things which will bring you the most joy. When you are feeling good about yourself, you'll be glowing inside and out.
Would you really want to attract just any old dude in any old situation? I mean, that might be alright if you are only looking for something sexual, but if you are talking friendship it would be best to find someone who holds many of the same values you do.

Many local charities have a young professionals group that raises many and goes on outings, usually heavily alcohol related. The groups are filled with single young professionals looking to get sauced and laid. And, hey, you're even doing it for a good cause!

Months ago I recommended a class to some women and they followed my advice and signed up. They are both in their middle 40's. Now I heard that one of them met a man in the class who was from her old neighborhood. Both of them are widowed and it turns out they are dating and its getting serious. Nice, huh?

52. I met my husband as part of a caving organization. We were |
|
both very involved, loved the group, loved the activities, and you can learn a lot about someone spending time with them underground.
Having said that, it is time for you to choose your own cool stuff you like to do.
If you are an active outdoorsy type, try outing clubs, hiking/boating/sking clubs..what ever makes your heart sing.
Bookish, intellectual: book clubs, community theatre, music appreciation groups
community service organizations are great for meeting people: Habitat, YWCA, Boys/Girls Clubs, Food Pantries, etc.
A large liberal church with lots of singles classes..my church has college singles, singles in their mid twenties to mid thirties, a class for the forties to fifties singles and another one for those older than that. There are always tons of service projects to work on with the group and stuff like that is a good opportunity to get to know people on a different level. The classes also have myriad social events..pot luck dinners, evenings out, excursions, etc. I know several couples now in my mostly couples class who started out in the singles groups.
Of course there is the ubiquitous coed softball or soccer leagues.
