Now Tony Bourdain's a guy I'd have a beer with. |
|
He's got this show "No Reservations" on the travel channel, it's essentially the same show he had on the Food Network. The premise is that he travels around the world and eats food. Now watching anybody eat is boring, but the interesting thing about this show is the places he goes and the people he meets.
Last night he travelled along the U.S./Mexican border, eating nachos and chips & salsa on the American side, and real food on the Mexican side. The thing is that right in the opening segment he deftly compares the proposed border wall to the Berlin wall, and it's all up hill from there. The best scene was when he was boating up the Rio Grande with a Texan mayor from a border town, and his Mexican counterpart talking about all this anti-immigration bullshit. Now these are the people directly affected by all this crap, people who all have family on both sides of the border, people who like things just the way they are. And you've got this actually texan mayor, somebody who actually speaks in a real Texan accent and doesn't forget to, saying "...and somebody wants to build a WALL here?!" incredulously. Oh, it was good TV.

7. Tony's my man crush... |

Arrogant and obnoxious, yet he reflects a lot of real world values that I just never see on TV.
He's a chain smoking, heavy drinking, potty mouthed organ meat eater with a heart of gold. Basically he's an American trapped within his French heritage, and I love him for it.
