Poll question: "Bar time's only 2:30? What do people do after that? Just go home?"
Said to me by someone from Chicago, about Milwaukee's apparently early bar time.

Your take on that statement:

1. It's only 1am during the week around here.
Oddly enough, there's a "speakeasy" type place in Summit, NJ. You have to be with a member. I know a member. It looks like an abandoned storefront. It's a weird feeling walking out of there and it's light.

2. It's 1 am. weekdays here in CT too.
I think that's a bit early consider sometimes I don't get out of work until 11:30, sometimes midnight.
Only one hour to drink---that's just not enough time!

3. It's 2 am here during the week.
Funny thing -- I have no idea what time bars are allowed to *open*. I've heard a few strip clubs advertise a third-shifters' show (starting at 8 am), but can they serve alcohol that early?

8. I did a brief search and couldn't find squat.
They don't give me a Westlaw subscription here.

9. Well, it's only 2am here.
On the rare occasion that I stay out that late I'm ready to go to bed at 2am. There are after hours clubs and such for those who like to stay up all night, though.

10. depends on the mood I am in...used to have what we called
juke joints...here in my neck of the woods (speakeasy same diff) After we closed down the legit bars we would head out to the boonies. Have to knock on the door and they looked thru a peephole. If they recognized you they would let you in. There was a band playing with a large dance floor. On the other side were pool tables and pinball and fooseball machines. In between was a bar or you could of course bring your own, also roll your own. In the back they were playing poker and shooting craps. And in the VERY back were the hookers turning tricks...I could go on but, I think you get the picture...

11. At one time I took full advantage of Chicago's 4am closing (5am on SAT)...
...times. On Saturday's in the Summer, I'd stay out until sunrise, then go to breakfast. So I can see this other person's point.

These days, I prefer to stay out of the bars altogether to be honest. I'd rather sit out on my patio and drink margaritas with my friends.

14. But in a city where the bars close at 2:30, would the peak time get

pushed earlier, or not happen at all?

(The bars I go to are likely no more interesting at 2 than they are at 8 -- I rarely go to clubs or anything trendy. Neighborhood taverns tend to be pretty steady.)

the advantage is that at a certain time huge groups of people decide to go home, and if the bars stay open longer than that then they are like a fun playground for artsy people with weird jobs. That time is 2 o clock just based on when people tend to have dinner and how long they can stay out drinking before they're exhausted.

18. I thought that had been changed to 2:00 some time back.
I remember when bartime on Sundays in Minnesota was midnight. One year quite a while back, when New Year's Eve fell on a Sunday, bar owners lobbied to have a law passed allowing bars to stay open until 1:00am on Sundays, same as the rest of the week. The law passed.

17. We usually go to a diner and eat some "drunk food"
The bars may close at 2 here in NJ but the diners are usually open 24/7

19. Except in Madison where the diner closes with the bar.
Sometimes 15 minutes before the bar. The "club" in Summit is fun though for after hours.
