I was going to lay on a lounge chair next to the pool, so I'm less sickly white for launching our boats this weekend, but naturally as I decide to do this, clouds randomly appear and it starts raining.

Book: Kingdom of Fear
Quote: I'd hate to advocate drugs, alcohol, violence or insanity to anybody but they've always worked for me. (I actually have it on a shirt)
Philosophical: The Edge...there is no honest way to explain it because the only people who really know where it is are the ones who have gone over. The others--the living--are those who pushed their control as far as they felt they could handle it, and then pulled back, or slowed down, or did whatever they had to when it came time to choose between Now and Later. But the edge is still Out there. Or may it's in. The association of motorcycles with LSD is no accident of publicity. They are both means to an end, to the place of definitions.

Book: probably F&L: on the Campaign Trail, but I've never read a bad one. My least favorite's probably The Rum Diaries, but even that's brilliant in its own way -- just lacking the voice of his later work
Quotable Quote: Love yours (just click on my info box if you don't believe me). But, because I' m a journalist myself, I've always appreciated this one from F&L: Las Vegas -- "Journalism is not a profession or a trade. It is a cheap catch-all for fuckoffs and misfits, a false doorway to the backside of life, a filthy piss-ridden little hole nailed off by the building inspector, but just deep enough for a wino to curl up from the sidewalk and masturbate like a chimp in a zoo cage."
The Philosophical HST: The Edge quote is equally a good call. This one from Las Vegas is also classic: "There was no point in fighting -- on our side or theirs. We had all the momentum; we were riding the crest of a high and beautiful wave. So now, less than five years later, you can go up on a steep hill in Las Vegas and look West, and with the right kind of eyes you can almost see the high-water mark -- the place where the wave finally broke and rolled back."
Bonus poltical quote, from The Campaign Trail: "How low do you have to stoop in this country to become president?" Those words have, for me, defined every presidential campaign of my lifetime.

Coming back from Hawaii we all took liberal advantage of the self-serve bar in the President's Club and took sleeping pills. Everyone fell asleep except for my one stepsister, who claims that she was awake for the whole flight with a minature man talking to her. It definitely wasn't the person next to her, because that was my sister who was passed out.

I had taken two pills that tested as MDA. Had some light visuals like the first hint that mushrooms are hitting you but otherwise just normal "E" type high. I had been feeling down for a while and I ended up falling asleep (with the light on). My sister comes into the room (around 6am) to get something and I tell her to turn the light out. Holy crap. The second I was in darkness, it was bizarre intense visuals. The air around me was completely filled with tiny people fighting and dancing etc. Just floating around like a cloud. Then, I have this hot pink face coming out of the wall next to my bed and worm-like shit coming up from all the surfaces around me. I was like, "well, this is unexpected" and I turn the light on. Everything goes back to normal. Turn the light off. Freak show. Look outside (where it's light...I have light blocking curtains AND blinds) and it's normal. I enjoyed the show for a bit, then I fell back asleep.
The same thing happened the next night even though I hadn't taken anything. That freaked me out, but then I got online and read that MDA can stay in you for 24-36 hours so I wasn't concerned after that.

The one time I went into convulsions on mushrooms, there were pink polka dots on everything right before it happened.

39. The first time I ate mushrooms... |
|
Edited on Thu May-25-06 02:50 PM by haruka3_2000
Was at the bar I normally hang out at. My friends and the bartender knew I had a bag of them, so they encouraged me to take them that night. I eat them and my friend and I set off to buy some papers. We decided to head back to the bar. About half an hour had passed and the bar would be closing in a few minutes. Anyway, the place is an Irish pub with all this insane shit on the walls. I was feeling fine and the second I walked through the door, I was just totally propelled into insanity. I looked at my friend and said...
"Shit, I just entered the Circus, Circus."
Then, I spent the next four hours thinking I had gone mad and that I'd never ever take mushrooms again. That didn't last too long and I only had one other bad experience, but that involved somebody in the group becoming violent and throwing furniture.
Edited because I'm an idiot and fucked up the subject line.

44. Ha! There must be some sort of archetypal dope fiend experience... |
|
I also have the violent, furniture-throwing experience. It was at a hotel party in Kansas City, and some guy who crashed it turned out to be a crackhead. He threw a chair (a BIG chair, like a Lay-Z-Boy) at this poor, petite lady, and we had to drag him out of the room bodily and heave him into a gutter.
I can't actually recall my first mushroom experience. I remember my first experience with LSD (house party in Los Angeles), and my first with Ecstasy (Phish show), but my first mushroom experience escapes me.

Fortunately, he didn't have to be physically tossed out. He kept yelling that it was fucked up to invite him over and kick him out though. It's like "hey buddy, people are invited over with the understanding that you don't throw chairs at the roommate of the guy that invited you over."
